Fine Stub? White And Staining? Need Your Advice!

Hi, all!

I'm looking at getting a Pelikan. I have an m200 with a Binderized EF and I'm not a huge fan of it, but would love to have a Pelikan in my rotation. (If you're at all interested in the m200, maybe just for the nib, let me know!) So I'm thinking of going with an M600 or M800.

I really like the white transparent and am thinking of getting it from Dan Smith with a stub. But he sold out of medium and broad nibs. I tend to write small--my favorite nibs are all Japanese mediums, one of which is a Mottishaw stub. Am I crazy to think a fine, tuned on the wet side, could work? (I'm not at all looking for big variation, just a hint of character.) Or would you all recommend just getting a medium from another seller and getting the nib worked on by Masuyama or someone else? Should I pass on the white altogether because of concerns about staining (how bad is it with good hygiene?...) and go with another model?

Would love to he's everyone's thoughts on this! I've been going over lots of things in my head the last few days and am curious what different views the collective wisdom of FPN can provide!

Aaand, I pulled the plug and went for it. Feel free to respond with your thoughts either way! (I don't mind disagreement—more excited to hear what people think!) I'll post a follow up when it comes in the mail!

To me it takes a M before you can see much from a stub, but maybe your experience will be different. I also worried about the white section staining so I don't have a Pelikan with a white section, but I sure keep thinking about getting one ;)

Dan stubbed a fine nib on a Lamy Dialog for me and its awesome. Just enough character to stand out a bit. Love it. With good hygiene, staining hasnt been an issue. On any of my white pens. Just use common sense. Enjoy the new pen.

I feel like my post has been visited by Pelikan royalty! Sargetalon, your website was a huge help, both in the individual reviews and in helping me confirm that no, the White Transparent was not something I liked most because it was available but because it was actually my favorite of the recent special editions! Thanks for all the work you've put into the site!

You flatter me too much. I'm happy to hear that I may have been of some assistance to you. An M605 White Transparent with a fine stub nib would be welcome in my flock for sure. Dan does great work. The other suggestion I would make is to consider an architect grind which I really enjoy as well. Hope you don't have to wait too long for you new pen.

OP - I have the exact pen that you have ordered, although I had Dan turn my fine into an cursive oblique and not a stub (still unclear on the exact difference). Let me just say that I am <in love> with this pen and the way it writes! I can see a great deal of difference between say it, and my Pineider LGB in fine. The vertical line thickness is the same, but that thin horizontal makes such a difference in the way my cursive looks. I was blown away by what Dan was able to do with a fine nib. Enjoy your new purchase! Dan is a treasure.

Enjoy your pen. I recently got a M400 White Tortoise and didn't have the B nib changed. It has been a joy to use. So far I have used Levenger Pomegranate and Edelstein Olivine in it. I noticed that I have to be careful to not get ink in the threads as it does show easier than on darker colors.....

I have the white transparent and also think it's the most compelling of recent releases. It's modern, cool. However, I don't use it because the factory F is dull. Does Dan work on nibs bought elsewhere?

Sarge - hmmm, interesting, you have been straying into Lamy territory? Lamy's EF architect's grind happens to be my favorite nib just now.

I wouldnt say stray. Just a one off due to the pens uniqueness.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
