Why Is The Pelikan 1 Liter Ink Bottle Tapered

Recommended Posts

I just got a Pelikan 1 Liter bottle of brilliant black, and I noted there's a pointy top to it. But the ink doesn't come out. Is it assumed that I should cut the tip with a knife, and the ink will flow that way? Or is it not meant to be cut? or will it just clog?

No direct knowledge, but that looks like the top on many packages of glue and other liquids, Try turning the orange spout just a bit counter-clockwise and that might open a valve that will allow ink to flow.

On the other hand, it may need to be cut, but that would leave you with on open tip, which is not good to control evaporation of the ink.

As a last resort, remove the orange top altogether, and pour from the bottle top.

As I said, no direct knowledge, so try the above suggestions CAREFULLY!

Ok, maybe I haven't expressed myself accurately enough. I remove the red cap, and there's a pointy top, but you can remove that and there's a large hole through which you pour the ink. But why is there a pointy top? It's strange to me that they'd make a top that tapers and you have to cut it open to get a smaller amount of ink out. It's just strange and they don't explain it.

Not everyone wants a river of ink. So they put a spout to control the flow. Like everything else that as a spout...

You can then fill an eyedropper-filled pen right from the big bottle.

I could see an old-style office environment (secretary pool) where the large bottle is used to refill bottles at each secretary's desk.

There's that, too. I remember the teacher filling our inkwell from a big bottle, back in primary school.

We wrote with dip pens, then. And my long pigtails would get dipped by the kid behind me. One reason to go to short hair!

I actually assumed that from the picture. Even if it wasn't an office pool...if I had that at home I'd use it to fill a smaller ink bottle, then filling the pen from the smaller bottle. A nice narrow spout seems like a great thing for that scenario, otherwise you'll want to hunt down a funnel.

I believe that Pelikan uses the same spout cap on some other products, including commercial inks.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
