51 Flighter With Nickel Cap Band...

I just picked up a 51 Flighter. Def user grade, which is great because I bought it to use :D

I would be interested to know about the cap. I do not see any pics of a cap like this one. What seems unusual, to me, is that the band is not gold, but matches the rest of the pen.

In the pics here (
https://imgur.com/a/NbCG09X), you can see it is quite tarnished, but evenly so. Took a polishing cloth to it, and voila! The band now matches the rest of the pen.

Here (
http://parker51.com/index.php/caps-home/caps-page-5/) it mentions that the gold band was done away with on later models, but I haven't seen images or mention of the exact configuration my cap seems to have.

Were 51 Flighters produced in a gold clip/nickel band configuration? Is this cap from a different pen? Was that band just originally gold) (seems unlikely to me, but I could be wrong)? Does this help date or otherwise ID the pen?

Just interested in knowing about what I have. Thanks!

Congratulations on your P-51 Flighter.

I have no idea about the cap. Wondering if the plating could have been polished off? Either way, it’s a nice find. Enjoy writing with it.

other than missing the gilding on the cap band, the cap is correct for a States aero P-51 flighter - so I'd agree with the suggestion that the g.f. on the band has been worn to zero.

+1

GF worn off.

There was a version of the Flighter cap without the GF band, but it had just the smooth steel cap, no band at all.

The tarnish/blackening on the band suggests the gold filling has completely gone.

Should not be an issue if in case you bought it for a good price. Enjoy using your 51 flighter.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
