Krishna Jungle Volcano

Krishna is an Indian ink brand that I know little about. They've recently become more easily available in Europe so I got a few bottles. They come in a small 20ml bottle which is rather ugly looking, especially the white plastic cap, but which seems sturdy enough.

Fellow FPN-er HalloweenHJB showed me how pretty Jungle Volcano is with its gorgeous sheen so I got a bottle to try it out. The hype is real: it's a very lovely dark red leaning orange, and shades a lot and especially, sheens a lot. The green sheen and the shading make the ink look almost brown.

Jungle Volcano has a medium to wet flow and is quite lubricating. But it is extremely difficult to clean out. I used a bulb to clean out the ink in the section, then put it in an ultrasonic cleaner for 10 minutes and there was still red and orange ink coming out. I had to take apart the nib and the feed and put them in the ultrasonic cleaner for another 10 minutes before it was (basically) clean out.

Nice review and beautiful to look at.

Also planning to do a review on the ink shortly.

Just something that bothered my mind, I believe David from Figboot on Pens categorize the JV as a red ink in one of his video which is quite strange to me.

I would categorize this ink more in the orange group of color, but that is just my rambling.

I used it in pen for a few weeks. I LOVED it. I used it in a cartridge and it did stain the cartridge. This ink i s lovely.

Penzel, it isn't really orange (though I can see the in swabs how it has a an orange cast), it's a red with a green hint so anyone who is RG colorblind will see it as brown.

The sheen on this is stunning and it's really a beautiful ink.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

As is with the other Krishna Inks I tried, the saturation of the ink directly causes the possibility of staining.

I thankfully am not colorblind (as per recent tests) but I guess we just have to disagree here.

Reddish brown is another option I would describe this ink, but I am really leaning towards a darker orange in this.

Something I agree with you is that it is absolutely a stunning ink, I wasn't able to unleash the full sheening capacity of the ink though

Yeah, I think it may be more orange based on the paper and the nib. It didn't always sheen for me, but it did on TR paper. It's really quite a pretty color.

I'm torn. My recent experience with Banana Yellow makes me reluctant to try another Krishna ink but I'm a sucker for green sheen so I might have to give this a go.

It's hard work to tell which is Old Harry when everybody's got boots on.

Cool review!

The ink though is not for me - I don’t care for super-sheen, and the very hard to clean bit you mentioned is a no-no for me (apart from my review Lamy’s, I mostly use piston fillers where I try to avoid staining inks)

I didn't encounter staining with my Pilot Con-40 converter, but gosh it was really hard to clean out.

I like sheen, but I'm not a huge fan of inks that use sheen as a gimmick at the cost of performance, behavior, etc. (the OS inks come to mind). The cleaning difficulty makes this one a no-go for me; I swap inks way too frequently for that to be worth it. Still, cool looking color, and great photo of the sheen in sunlight.

Also, I agree, the Krishna bottles are really ugly, but seem functional. They seem like they could be handled roughly and survive.

I do have to say that the Banana Yellow actually flushed from the pen - M200 - pretty easily.

I like it but I'll wait until I see bigger bottles offered. Gimme 50mL or more and I'll buy it right now.

I did see some of their inks have something floating on them... I don't think it's some kind of growth of (micro)biological nature, more like some kind of impurity that got separated from the liquid. So you may not want a bigger bottle...

That has been my experience with Krishna inks... Maybe around 4 in 10 bottles had "dirt" on them. That's a pretty high ratio. Meaning quality control is not something they take seriously.

I won't put them in my pens, but dip pens are fine.

For some bottles I had thought dirt as well, but those inks seem to have some kind of shimmering particles in them, so I think they could be glitters, or some kind of crystallisation due to high concentration, maybe...

(Note: this is NOT Jungle Volcano. I forgot which it was... The "cross"-like things on the right of the photo look quite scary though...)

Not for me, I tested them looong time ago, way before they started releasing super sheeny and shimmery inks. All my inks were just regular/plain inks. They didn't smell bad, so I knew it was not organic, and it didn't look like it was undissolved dyes either. It was like dirt in them.

  • 4 weeks later...

Is it possible to get this ink NOT to sheen?

YES!!

My new bottle (not a sample) had a few floaties, as pictured about, but, not as bad as in the picture. Around the rim of the open bottle, I could clearly see the green sheen after I opened it. I decided to fill a Preppy with a 0.5 nib, using a Platinum converter. Before filling, I gently rotated the bottle for a bit of agitation, and checked to make sure there was no buildup on the bottom of the bottle.

I did my usual ink swab, and they only green noticeable was where the ink was very heavy, at the beginning of the swab. Nowhere else. I thought it was weird enough to hold it oblique, in the sun. Nothing!

So, I wrote a page. Color came through accurately, as in the above swab samples. And, oddly, nothing on the page. Not even a hint of green sheen.

This particular Preppy puts down a pretty heavy line, as I've used it before. With this ink, there was plenty of flow, so I don't think it's just too dry. I've used this pen also for other inks that sheen, and have always been pleased with the flow and resultant sheen left behind.

I must be doing something wrong. There is zero sheen in my writing on the page. Paper was Rhodia for the writing, and Clairefontaine for the swab ink sample.

I could do some drop samples on plain paper, like above, and see if I get anything different..There has been some word from posters that QC seems to be a bit all over the place? Could that be it?

Any ideas?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
