Pen Won't Close Gap At Finial & Body

For some reason (probably my fault) this my M805 will not close the gap indicated in my first picture. I have tried tightening the screws that are in the finial and the barrel but with no success. I am scared to twist any harder without injuring the pen. From looking at the inside of the finial there are clearly slots that the piston fits and I am sure I have gotten those to align but still no success. Am I missing a part? Need a specific tool to tighten the screws on either the finial and/or the barrel? I find this gap to be frustrating. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

It is likely you need to take the mechanism at least partially out of the barrel to get the filler knob to meet the barrel. What happens is that the piston is fully retracted before the knob is fully tightened on its threads. With the knob off and the piston at the front of the barrel there is simply not enough movement allowed on the piston to fully seat the knob. With the mechanism out the barrel you can start the knob onto its thread with the piston extended out beyond where it would impact the section or even not yet engaged on its thread. It may take a few attempts to get the position right / synchronise the piston and knob positions so you get the full piston movement with the knob going all the way down.

 

These parts are normally assembled before installing the mechanism in the barrel.

Did you remove the piston for cleaning? If you did I expect you didn't reassemble the piston rod correctly for it's full travel and it's causing the issue.

I thought the finial was the thing at the end of the cap, and the end of the body, the piston knob.

 

No help in I have no intention of unscrewing my 1000 ever. Nor a need to do so.

Any chance you could explain how to about this disassembly? Do I need any special tools? Could I damage the pen.

You will need a little wrench that fits the piston mechanism where there are two flat spots (TWSBI pens usually come with one that will fit). The mechanism is fitted to the barrel with a reverse thread.

Sent it, along with a MB 146 to Mike Matsuyama for nib grinding and repairing. Thanks all. I just don’t trust myself not to screw the pen up further.
