So...PAKMAN and I took our picture, following a three year tradition. We started after realizing that we never showed up in pictures from the event.

And picked up this little beauty. M200, Grey Marble, B nib.

Had a great time on our day trip yesterday. I had my comrade-in-pens Zac (who has been with me every time I have attended). This year, I also brought my wife and a new pen enthusiast Michael.

A friend who works in my department and his wife also went for the first time.

We got there too late to get on Mike Masuyama's list. Oh, well - we survived...

I was relatively good, as the things I really was interested in (the M205 Olivine and the Esterbrook Estie with an Extra Fine nib) are not quite available.

I also was told about a new color model of the Platinum 3776 by the Luxury Brands folks that has me really excited. When I mentioned it to Brian Anderson at the Anderson Pens table, I was told that it was not supposed to be public knowledge, so I will pass on mentioning it until Platinum can make their announcement.

I did pick up a good number of inks that I am looking forward to trying out - many from "new to me" brands. I also restocked on paper goods from Nock Co (it was really good to see Brad Dowdy at the show - here's hoping that he can make it again in the future) and got a black Tallulah to go with my kickstarted clay one. Brad showed me a new colorway for the Sinclair that will be an instant order for me - the fall may be an expensive one for me.

It was great to see so many people again, talk with people I didn't know before, try things out and just explore our fun hobby. I only picked up a TWSBI Go, but got leads for several more substantial purchases in the future.

My wife and Michael had a blast. She came home with five pens of her own and found a treasure trove of cheap (3 for $10) pens for handing out to people who are interested in pens or may be interested. Michael picked up three new pens (I think - it may have been four) and spent time picking out a good pen for a mutual friend who was unable to attend. Zac picked up several new pens and some ink. The Franklin-Christoph table provided three pens for three different folks in our group.

We met folks from the St. Louis pen show and my wife mentioned that it might be fun to visit it during a vacation in some future year. Everyone had a great time and we're all looking forward to the next one.

Current Daily Carry: Pilot Custom 743 with 14k Posting nib (Sailor Kiwa-Guro), Sailor 1911L Realo Champagne with 21k Extra Fine nib (Sailor Tokiwa-Matsu). Platinum Century 3776 Bourgogne (Diamine Syrah), Nakaya Portable Writer Midori with 14k Extra Extra Fine nib (Lamy Peridot), Pilot Vanishing Point Stealth Black with Extra Fine nib unit (Pilot Blue Black), a dozen Nockco DotDash index cards of various sizes and a Traveler's Notebook.

It's been my experience at pen shows that one often finds that irresistible pen at that irresistible price on the last day of a show, and so it was that I dropped by the table of my good friends Joel Hamilton and Sherrell Tyree, two of the nicest of the many nice people I have met in the pen business. There I found a pen that I'd not had the opportunity to see before, the M800 limited edition Blue Ocean. I had seen photos of the Blue Ocean before, but nothing prepared me for the beautiful color of this pen. To top it off, it bore a factory oblique triple-broad nib. Joel conjured a very attractive price, and I came away with my most important purchase of the Dallas show, just beating out my Montegrappa Extra 1930 in yellow celluloid.

The show again has been a gathering of great friends, as well as a huge success for the vendors. We had terrific crowds both yesterday and today. Congratulations to everyone involved, and many hugs to all my friends, whom I don't get to see nearly often enough.

Rationalizing pen and ink purchases since 1967.

I saw this pen yesterday. While I the nib size doesn't do much for me, I have to agree that it is a stunner! I'm glad that it has found a good home with you!

The DPS has always been a blast. But this year is especially being a vendor for the first time. My table looks like this:

Had a blast meeting a lot of people that I corresponded with online and of course meeting local and local-ish pen friends :)

I'll have to get a 45 from you next year.

Yep, another great pen show. Good to see Danny (who fixed a pen for me as usual) and Perry (I forgot to ask as I was leaving - did you sell the Pucci Parker 180?). Visited with Shawn Newton about a pen I'm saving for and got two nibs ground by Mike Masuyama. Saw JMcCarty3 at Mike's table - he was about 4 slots ahead of me on the list. Visited with the Andersons, which is always a pleasure and bought an extra nib for one of my Edisons, which was to be of the MM grinds.

Spent a lot of time looking over Tim Pierson's inventory but the pens that interested me most were over budget; oh well, there's always next year. Nice visit with ink-pen Sherrell and Joel, but ended up not buying anything there. I limited the budget severely this year and had a hard time deciding where to spend it. Sherrell had a gorgeous carmine Balance, but I have a green one and I decided not to duplicate any pen types this year.

Saw a Pelikan I really wanted at Pendemonium, but I knew I shouldn't buy it - someone else did and saved me! I was sort of hunting a vintage Pelikan but late on Saturday I found two vintage Senator Regents, which are Pelikan clones. One had a stub and the other a soft medium. The two together were the right price and I'm really enjoying them. Nice piston pens in great condition with very nice nibs. Other than that, some ink and a leather pen wrap. But mostly very enjoyable visits with pen folk.

Oh, and one near heart attack. When my parents were married, a friend of my dad's family gave him Parker 51 flighter pen/pencil sets for both fathers and the groomsmen, engraved with the names and date. The guy was a Parker exec and Susan Wirth told me they were engraved at the factory. I have both my grandfather's pens, but I look at all the 51 flighters because it would be so cool to find one or two of the others (and no telling where they ended up). At Tim's table I picked one up - and....engraving!! But it only took a second to realize it wasn't the right engraving. Oh, well, I doubt I'll ever actually find one, but it's fun to look.

I enjoyed visiting with you at the show! Loved the story about the wedding Parker 51 flighters! Came home with the Puci Ms Parker 180. I'll bring it to Little Rock to gauge interest there or maybe put it in Classifieds here. It is a pretty unique pen, I'm sure I'll find someone that needs it in their collection. I came home with 3 pens from the show, a lady was selling off her husbands collection. I'm working on cleaning them up so no picture yet.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
