Value? Montblanc Patron Of Art Karl De Grosse, Charlemagne, 888

Does anyone have any insight into how much an 888 edition of the Montblanc Patron of Art Karl de Grosse, Charlemagne fountain pen would be worth on the secondary market? I see one being offered on Ebay for about $10k, but no results there or on LiveAuctioneers, Invaluable, etc. It is lightly used but with no apparent flaws, and I do have the paperwork and boxes. Thanks in advance!

Don't know, saw a Brandenburg 7-8 years ago at my B&M for @E16,000.

There are a couple of these sold through Bonhams in 2015. One for £2,000 and the other for HK$32,000. That's a bit of a spread, but well under half of the $10k being asked on eBay. And yes, those prices were for the 888 model.

There are some earlier sales if you search their site.

Nice link, a MB rolled gold 742 like mine is worth $400-600....I paid E180 in a live auction. It's a heavy standard sized pen with a nib that lays between semi-flex and maxi-semi-flex, the only one I have like that. I couldn't let that nib go to a dealer.

 Got to use it more.

I got my Virginia Woolf on sale for 1/3 off..E450...had I never inked it, left it in the plastic, and waited a few years, it got back to new price of E750.

But I write with my pens.

Most of those LE MB's are for signing a contract for your 301 foot yacht. For those who has a secretary to do their writing....pulling it out to sell your bankrupt company.

Everyone I know says, fountain pens are a poor investment. Buy gold bars, gold coins, houses.

If you bet the leading apprentice jockey to place, might be better also.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
