Good Day From The Southern United States

Before I get started in other parts of the forums, I might as well start with an introduction!

I got into fountain pens just a few years ago, probably 3 or 4? It all started with a Pilot Prera... I don't even remember why I got it in the first place, haha!
Flash forward to today, and I've got 9 pens, vintage and new, in working order with 5 more I plan to refurbish.

I like interesting pens, things that are old or unique. When writing normally, fine nibs are more to my taste so I can write small. But I have a soft spot for the stub nib for calligraphic writing.
And to serve my new collection habit, I prowl thrift shops whenever I'm on vacation. Most of the time, I don't find much, but occasionally, I get some good results!

At the time of writing, I have (from gifts and my own purchases):

Pilot Prera <CM> Caligraphy Medium (Demonstrator Blue)

Pilot Metropolitan Fine (Black)
Sheaffer Imperial 330 (Black)
Jinhao X450 (Red Ice)
Jinhao 950 (Dragon)
Jinhao 599 (Blue plastic version)
Sheaffer Snorkel (Grey)
Stratford Regency Pen 10044 des 140026 (Black)
Eagle Pencil Company New York Pen circa ~1900, n.1451 nib, (glass cartrage missing)
I've got some more pens, actually, but the rest are in need of various forms of refurbishment before they're functional. (hint hint Parker hint hint) And I hope my time at this forum will give me the knowledge to make it work!
Thanks for reading, I hope to be an active member!
-Mike

Welcome to FPN, Mike! Yes, there is a forum on pen repair. It's very useful.

It is good to have you here - it looks like your pen collection is expanding. I dare say it will expand more rapidly now...

Erick

Thanks Erick!

Yeah, my collection has been expanding quite well over the years, haha. And there are many more pens I have an interest in that I don't have yet.

Lamy Safari. maybe a TWSBI? Oh, the Parker 180's cool.

Ahhh, but I have to hold my cash. I'm actually a University student so I don't have much that's free to use for my hobby.

Hello Mike, and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
