Fountain Pen Store in Monrovia ( suburb of LA)

Flax Pen to Paper in Westwood ( near UCLA campus).

Each is different, each is great. Fred at FPS and Joan and Philip at Flax are very knowledgeable, reputable, and extremely customer friendly. The stores are very different, but both stores are worth the trip if you're in LA. Been going to both since the 70's !

Is there a time limit on editing posts? I went to edit the OP to add the new recommendations and I can't find the edit button. I'm logged in (obviously). Is it possible for a moderator to give me back my edit button? :)

In Tokyo, the mecca of stationery meccas, you have many choices. Itoya is an entire building with another annex building.

This place looks amazing! Makes me want to visit Tokyo! This page gives a quick tour of the place... https://livejapan.com/en/in-ginza/article-a0001536/

I know that Goulet has a physical location but do they sell out of it?

They do not. In the tour of their new offices they state they don't have the parking to allow customers to visit.

On a visit to SoCal years ago was a small shop that carried a lot of vintage pens. Is that FPS? It seemed like it was in Monrovia...

I was in Europe in August and stumbled upon Ackerman when I visited The Hague. Got a Preppy for 5 EUR and a bunch of felt-tipped pens for my daughter.

I was also in Rome and Florence and, (bleep), I can't believe I didn't think of looking up stores. I guess I was having enough fun as it was, although I kept nagging my wife to take a detour to Torino and visit Aurora's factory, but she wouldn't budge, though ;-)

Bittner in Carmel by the Sea, Californa. They are the only place I know for quality pens in Northern California. Tell them Alan sent you. They'll know who you mean.

They also have an inside pipeline to Mike Masuyama. While he's quoting a month or more for individuals, he gives a week or two response to Bittner. So when I need his services, I let Bittner send it to him.

Penny Post in Old Alexandria,VA. Decent selection of pens, inks, pencils, nibholders, and a large selection of paper.

I didn't have much time, but left with a Kaweco Perkeo, a nice nibholder, and some dark brown cartrdges.

Very helpful staff. I really enjoyed my visit.

In the Netherlands, in addition to Akkerman in den Haag, there are Appelboom in Laren, Fontoplumo in Delft, and La Couronne du Comte in Tilburg. There is a second Akkerman store, I believe no longer financially related to PW Akkerman in den Haag, on Langebrugsteeg in Amsterdam; it's more like a gift shop in the main shopping area. IIRC they didn't stock Akkerman inks, but I may be wrong. Also, Penworld in Antwerp, Belguim.

I'm planning on re-visiting Akkerman and getting to Fontoplumo and Penworld in my still-on-the-drawing-board northern Europe swing with my daughter next summer.

Pen & Pad in Albuquerque, New Mexico also sells fountain pens, inks and papers - and has a small but nice collection.

Oh, I forgot them. And I'll be in ABQ next month!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
