Hi everyone! I am rekindling my pen fascination after nearly 20 years ago. I used to work in a tobacco shop in Memphis which was the only retailer of fine writing instrument in the region in my early 20's. The shop like many others has now closed, but I still have my memories and a couple of nice pens out of the deal. I'm hoping to expand my knowledge and collection. Last weekend I took a drive to Little Rock to visit the nice folks at Vanness and they took excellent care of me. At this time I'm particularly interested in vintage pens.

Welcome home. Pull up a srump and set a spell. Unfortunately I find that every year fewer and fewer of the pens I own are still vintage.

Thanks for adding me. I hope to learn a lot from these forums. I don't have a large collection of pens, but I do have two Shaeffers (including the one I used in high school), one Parker, and the rest, well, are Chinese pens, some of which write very well. Okay, hello from Northern California!

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy.       I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off.
