New Entry-Level Urushi Pen

Being a Configuration Manager for many years I have an ingrained dislike of policy versus practice conflicts but in this case if you have a look at Phthalo's pinned post Welcome to Pens from the Land of the Rising Sun! it says "This forum is for the discussion of vintage and modern Japanese fountain pens, as well as pens from other manufacturers which feature traditional Japanese Urushi and Maki-e work".

So I think Manu Propria Pens qualifies for inclusion here.

I just wish Martin's posts talked more about the how and why of his pen manufacture and looked less like advertising brochures.

Not too keen on the banning thing, but the tag-line for Manu Propria is "Fountain pens made in Switzerland." Seems that the company actually makes a virtue of not being based in Asia, so it's fair to ask if they should be in this forum. Just sayin'

GEtting to the pen, what is the price point? It looks like it might be a shut-off-valve eyedropper, is this the case? I find the techniques used on it quite interesting. How would it compare to something like that Wancher Dream Pen coming soon?

"Oh deer."

It has no shut-off valve, I have chosen another concept:

For all eye-dropper, I use synthetic cotton wool as used in Aquarium filter.

The barrel is stuffed moderately with such cotton.

The cotton keeps or holds the ink and slows down the flow in the tank.

The pictures show the "Suisô" Eye-Dropper (Suisô = Cistern).

The barrel has a ink capacity of 10 ml+

The cotton has little influence on the ink capacity

For the Simplicitus very little cotton is needed and ink ac be filled in without ink flowing out through the nib

For the Suisô, the cotton is filled at the back but filled at the fron due to the large reservoir

Cheers,

Martin

Would you swap cotton when changing ink? Would you throw it away before taking the pen out of rotation/use? It seems a simple solution for a single ink color in regular use, but I am curious of complications it may raise for my use pattern.

The interesting thing is, that the synthetic cotton does not absorb the ink.

If you was the pen, the cotton will appear just white

Fascinating. Thanks for the details, and I'd be very interested to hear anyone's experiences over time...

Too many pens; too little writing.

One more opinion: definitely in the right section.

Another one: Danitrio is an American brand (in exactly the same way their owners are truly American citizens; and the brand has always been based in America).

Well, this pretty much clarifies the issue and solves the controversy.

I still can't find the price from those links.

You have to click on the entries that are labeled "Price list". I agree it's confusing. Because there's a kind of unclear naming convention used and the separate price list makes it hard to find the match. The other thing, we have no indication of currency designation. Instead of a period or a comma, there's an apostrophe. I'm guessing this is Swiss francs. I don't see anything really entry level priced.

Martin, does it (synthetic cotton) help to stop ink burping, that is common in Eyedropper pens?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
