Saying Hello To You All.

Hi Pete,

New to this hobby, I'm enjoying everything about this. I'm not one to spend 100's on a pen, but I do like the oversized pens, as I'm a cheapskate, I use most of my money on my Motorbike, a custom VN900....

I'm more interested in the inks than the pens.

I use the cheap pens, good ink like I say to have more for motorbikes and beers!

I like the Jinhao 159, perfect size for me, I have an x750 and a Pilot MR which to be honest, I prefer the 159.

Med nib is the lowest, but I like the broad nibs as I write quite large I think. I do like inks that have some nice shading, so the broad shows that off more of course.

So just stopping by on the internet motorway to say hello to you all.

Pete

Hello and welcome.

A while back on a defunct snail mail forum, there was a picture of fountain pens on a motorbike (it was a red flashy looking bike).

Welcome home. Pull up a stump and set a spell. Once had a Bonnie; never had to change the oil. Just had to remember to pour what dripped out overnight back in. Last motorcycle I owned. Roommate had to put his over when a fool made a right turn from the left lane and cut him off. He ended up with a steel pin from knee to hip and I decided maybe bikes were not meant for me. Still miss the sounds and smells and connection with the real world found on a bike and missing in most cars.

Hello and welcome to the community!

You can find lots of info (and scans) about inks in the dedicated subforum. There are posts for every color ever produced and some more. : )

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
