My Gift To Me!

Wanted to share and get some help with the ID

Was at an antique store yesterday and was drawn to a Waterman pen and pencil set.

The tags were still on it! Don't think the pen has ever been inked. Had to get it. Today is my birthday and that became my present!

Seen these at shows before but I've never held one. Nib is hard as a rock. They say "firm" on the writing.

The lever still moves, so I haven't decided if I want to try and resac it. I'm betting the sac, completely unused, would be fine, for a bit, but I'm thinking I should just resac anyway to be safe.

Sorry I couldn't get my phone to focus on either side of the nib very well. The one thing I noticed that was interesting is the feed has two channels in it but this is a one tined firm nib. Did they just stick a music feed in this and call it good? Is there a benefit? Or is this a purely aesthetic look to it?

Internet is showing this particular set from the 30's, 40's, and 50's, depending on what you click on. Can anyone help me with a little more accuracy?

Late 40's Taperite Ctrusader set. The cap on yours is in unusually good shape, happy birthday. BTW the shape of the nib screams "manifold" you could probably use the pen to make carbon copies, and it will polish up nicely with a jewellery cleaning cloth.

I had one of those! Loved the nib, but the plastic was brittle and cracked near the section. I don't think it's a taperite, aren't they a smaller, partially-hooded nib?

Oh my did I lead you down the wrong path! Not a Taperite at all. Serves me right for posting when I'm too tired to know what I'm typing. Pen Lady goofs again - sorry!

I have a few Waterman open-nib versions of the Taperite pens (which I prefer to the usual version). This looks like an open nib Crusader.

Ah hah! Richard Binder's site to the rescue!

Looks like it is a Crusader, a pen I had never heard of before. According to the one sentence description on his site, it is a Taperite with an open nib! And I think that's about all I'm going to get. Anything else, look up Taperites. Fine with me, I like the Taperite :D

I have two other Taperites too, and neither have that cap. However, that is a more common cap and the others I have are uncommon.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
