gorgeous pen but that plain jane JoWo gold nib really lets it down.

And it's kind of pricey for what it is. for $720 USD, I'd go for a namiki or sailor.

Selling a boatload of restored, fairly rare, vintage Japanese gold nib pens, click here to see (more added as I finish restoring them)

Same for me... Jowo nibs with no customization whatsoever make me lose interest eventhough it looks like a very interesting finish.

Dont forget wancher is offering urushi pens with jowo nibs for less than 400$.

Im not implying its the same, but its difficult to convince oneself.

What do you think how many nibs one has to buy for a customization? I heard from another maker that it is at least several hundreds per nib size, so you are quickly at 2000 nibs for just 4 nib sizes.

Bock himself buys the gold for the nibs shortly before making them because he cannot put so much money in stock. Not even Wancher has personalized nibs but you expect from a one-person company to put 100000 USD in stock? Are you kidding?

By the way, the Wancher dream pen is actually 460 USD for the 18K. Let's cite correctly.

Namiki Urushi collection (the small one) is 1250 USD in Japan - comparable pen. A bit bigger and 500 USD more expensive. good price for the nib.

Sailor KoP ebonite (not urushi) nowadays offered from 50000 up. Not comparable. A nice pen but no LE. Sailor LEs are 80000+.

(corrected a mistake, the Namiki price was given without tax, now it is corrected)

Yes, two pens. Financially no.

But I know Martin Pauli by mail.

The information regarding the nibs is not from him. I have some more connections into the pen world of companies.

One tip for customization of JoWo nibs is by way of fpnibs.com.

Let it be send to fpnibs.com, fpnibs modifies or exchanges and then send it to you. I know of other small makers who provide such an offer.

Or simply buy a JoWo at fpnibs and swap the nib by yourself.

Then you have a spare JoWo - but as #6 is becoming the most common size in bespoke pens, you will find lots of uses.

I even consider upgrading one of my Jinhao 159 to an 18K.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
