Hi All,

A new member signing in from Antwerp, Belgium.

I recently rediscovered my interest in fountain pens which, with the help of our good friend google, brought me to this wonderfull forum.

During my school career I actually wrote for the most part with a fountain pen, not sure from what age though. I still remember the moment when I went with my father to the shop to choose the pen. The shop is long gone, but I did recently found the pen again.

It is a Sheaffer pen from the '90. It shows (unfortunately) a lot of damage after all those school years.

After disassembly & cleaning yesterday, it writes perfectly again & i will surely start using it again.

However, I'm also in the market for a new pen. Still unsure which direction to go. Max budget would be around 150€ & apparently there is already quite some options in that price range.

I do live very close to the penworld.be shop, so I guess I'll just drop by & check out some pens in real life.

Finally I'll attach some pictures from my first pen. Please don't judge me too hard about the damage it has sustained, it really went through a lot ;-)

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

Your school pen looks fine to me. My 1972 "Tropen Scholar" is still in my collection and writes beautifully - but it looks as if it had been through the Ardenne in WWII.

Save up a bit more and buy yourself a beautiful CONID Bulkfiller Kingsize, from the Antwerp Company (Fountainbel). They are fantastic writers and outperform most other pens on the market, for various reasons.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
