Jules Verne? Or Is It...

Hello all,

I am looking into purchasing this pen. I have looked at all the internet pictures and read about them. But the nib is not the original nib nor is the box. It seems to have came from a reputable shop.

What can you all tell me about this?

I know of that reputable shop. :) I have also seen many fake pens with warranty booklets stamped with that exact stamp before. :( Anyone can have a stamp made up to look like that.

The box doesn't look right because of that band over the pen. :( A standard Montblanc box would have a division along the centre for the pen to push down into.

It's obviously the wrong nib, but at least it resembles a Montblanc standard nib. The etched signature doesn't look fine enough. Does it have a number on the cap in the format: xxxxx/xxxxx?

How does the pen fill? Does it unscrew in the centre or does it fill by twisting the chrome end cone?

So far I'm saying fake, but unscrew that end cone, show us the chrome screw threads, and say it's an internal fixed piston filler like the Meisterstück 146 & 149, and it could just about be an authentic one with a replacement nib.

An authentic one will cost somewhere in the region of $1000 or more. -_-

Personally I wouldn't touch this one with a long barge pole..... -_-

I havnt gotten it yet, because I had some doubts. Though i would come here to get an expert opinion. I did ask for more pictures.

Looks like 14875/18500 ? Which automatically, by looking at the Montblanc site, makes it a fake. Considering the site mentions only 14000 of the fountain pens.

I think you are right to have your doubts. The threading where the cap screws on doesn't seem the same as pics of the originals I have seen (I am totally not an expert).

The total always includes those fountain pens sold in sets too, so that number doesn't make it a fake.

I thought that too, but I sold mine so I no longer have it to compare against. But that band in the centre does look wider. It's probably like that because the pen unscrews in the centre and is a fake. :(

The shade of blue in the pictures doesn't look right either.

Never knew that. Thank you for clearing it up :)

The nib does not appear to be original. I can't tell whether it's fake nib or a replacement montblanc nib from another model. That's enough for me to walk away.

I dont have my Verne in front of me but 99% sure its fake. Pattern looks off and the section should be curved in in the middle. And no true point of comparison but it looks a bit skinny. And the warranty book should be larger and more ornate (not the standard MB book). And the nib....

Pass on this pen. Even if somehow it is real a correct nib would probably cost you as much as a for sure genuine used Verne. Price quotes I have heard about for out of stock LE nibs have been very high recently.

If you want less blah, blah, blah and more pictures, follow me on Instagram!

Great. Thank you all!

and I know this might be a long shot. Does anyone know anything about Sheaffers? Tried the Sheaffer sub-forum on here too. I have one set I have NEVER seen anywhere before.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
