Hello From Norfolk, Uk.

Hello everyone, I'm Doc from the UK.

Ive been using fountain pens since i was a child so the use of them is not new to me. That said, i had a 20 year period of my adult life where i didnt give them a 2nd thought and a couple of years ago i stumbled across SBREBROWN and his reviews and that ignighted a new interest in fine writing instruments.

My first new pen i bought was the Visconti Chiantishire with a F paladium nib, having watched Stephen's review i fell for the pen and as luck would have it he was also selling.

I then succumbed to the inevitable MB itch and bought a 146 with M nib while i was in San Diego at the boutique. (Being honest id have bought 2nd hand but there are so many fakes i wanted to ensure i was getting the pen i wanted).

Next were some cheap calligraphy pens with various nib sizes. I am really enjoying the 1.1mm nib and its line variation for everyday writing so think i will try and find a nice stub or ittalic nib on a pen i buy in the future. (Always open to suggestions if you have favourites)?

Subsiqnetly i have bought a few cheap all rounders such as the jinhao 159 (what a great pen for the money), the waterman graduate (for me the F nib is king and the M slightly to wide for my writing).

Finally i took the plunge with a Mabie Todd Swallow, with superflex No.2 nib. Its currently in the post but im quite excited to try it out when it gets here.

I look forward to my time here and hope to chat with you all at some point.

Regards

Doc

Hello Doc and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

Contact Anna at www.thewritingdesk.co.uk and order yourself a lovely Conway Stewart with medium-stub ground nib.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
