A Stupid Question :)

Hi All!

I have a stupid question: has there ever been a Tortoiseshell Brown version of the M600 in recent years (that is, after 2000)? I know that there's a special run of the M400 and there was one for the M800, but what about the M600?

best,

Fabio

If I remember correctly, there was a small, special order run of M600 torts done for a Japanese company 18 or 20 years ago. Very hard to come by...

The simple answer to your question is no. The last brown tortoise in the M600 line came before 1997 and was a very limited run for Japan. Very seldom seen. No rumors that I've heard about Pelikan bringing a tortoise to the M600 line this year. Will have to wait and see what next year brings.

Edited to add that the Tortoise M600 from the late 90s has the old style trim meaning its the same size as an M400.

Perhaps not really the color you're thinking of, but in 2002 Pelikan made an M620 in a brown which could be called a tortoiseshell. It was part of the City Series, specifically San Francisco.

I have one, and the color is very similar to my [imitation] tortoiseshell eyeglasses.

I remember Daenghafez (member here) has the M600 made for the Japanese market (with double rings) mentioned above; he has an extensive Pelikan collection, maybe he can chime in with photos. I have asked Pelikan, as have others, to reintroduce the M600 brown tortoise but they do not have it in the works, according to them. Maybe if we harangue them enough, they'll relent!

Just my personal observation but it seem that they are using the M600 line for brighter colors that are somewhat non-traditional for the company. This stands out if you look at the last several releases in the line-up (Pink, Turquoise-White, White Transparent) and consider the rumored orange marbled coming later this year. The more standard finishes seem to skip over the M600. If you look at the Stresemann, for instance, we have an M405 and an M805 in that finish with an M1005 coming. Who is the notable standout? Seems like this is by design rather than just benign neglect.

Did I miss an announcement? Looks like an M1005 will be in my near future!

No official announcement yet but keep an eye out. Expected towards the end of the year.

Thank you sargetalon. I appreciate the insight here, and it makes a lot of sense. I hadn't looked at it like that before. Sadly though, it means my wallet and I will always be looking for the elusive, near-mythical, probably-ridiculously-expensive, Japanese M600 Tortoise...

Yes, that's a good point. I've been waiting (in vain it seems) for an M600 Stresseman and M600 brown tortoise, but hadn't stopped to consider the recent overall trends. I don't mind the brighter colors, but prefer more traditional colored pens. I wonder if they see the M600 and M800 as splitting in terms of gender and age, and that is determining the color choices.

Thank you all for the replies! Hopefully the good folks at Pelikan will reconsider and introduce a tortoiseshell brown M600. Or do a new round of the legendary M800 ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
