Hi From Spain

Hi,

I am Volker, just turned 49 years young, always been fond of fountain pens (my handwriting sucks to the point that I am very often unable to decipher my own scribblings, writing with a fountain pen does a good deal in circujmventing this, as it makes my writing magically become readable to almos everyone).

I live just some Kilometers from the beautiful and bustling city of Málaga in southern Spain, at an equal distance from the excellent brick and mortar pen store "Sanatorio Estilográfico M. Gandoy" and the location of the great guys from fpnibs.com, to great danger and more often than not damage to my wallet/PayPal/Credit card.

I am fond of affordable pens. Now, this can have different meanings, but also as a fountain pen advocate (I always carry a couple of Pilot V-Pens around to get others hooked onto my drug of choice) I hardly own a pen more expensive than 100€, most are in the range well below 50 €. I´ll rather buy half a dozen chinese pens for a tenner, and only have two of them be good writers and discard the rest than get the sure shot at a 150€ Pelikan. Of course, I avidly collect Lamy's yearly Al-Star and Safari special editions, own quite some TWSBIs and uncountable Wing Sungs and Lanbitous, along with many affordable supermarket pens.

I also recently got into inks. Last inventory has turned up around 30 bottles of ink, more than enough to last me well through retirement. I use my pens daily, for notes at work, journaling (one Rhodia A4 Webbie every 4-6 months, give or take a few) and everywhere there is something to write on paper.

I am glad and thankful for this place on the internets, and I´ve been hanging around in the Facebook gruop for some time before I decided to join here. Thanks for all the information collected throughout the years that can be found here, it has helped me many times, and I hope that I can contribute a useful grain of sand once in a while.

Cheers,,

Volker

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

Buen Camino!

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
