Ink Mix Rambling, Not For The Feint Of Heart . . .

Tas

My remnant mixes always turn out an oily greenish brown :(

Not unlike the color you see on the stretches of ground down by the river that also happens to be visited by a large amount of ducks and/or geese.

Dont be put off. This mix had its fair share of greenish browns thrown in.

I'm not trying to be perverse (it comes naturally) but oily greenish brown sounds like something I'd find appealing.

LoL!

Reminds me of the first review I saw of Noodler's El Lawrence. Not a color I would have gone out of my way for -- but I kept staring at the images in the review, muttering "That is some weird-ass color" under my breath. It was kinda like a car accident, where you just somehow *cannot* look away. So I got a sample and loved the color. Go figure....

Ooo, I like doing this B).

I followed Mad Science's example - only I didn't wear a lab coat and ink went all over the desk leaving pink stains.

I see plenty of Diamine Syrah in there. I often add this to blue up greeny blue-black mixes.
I see a lot of Navajo Turquoise and LCR from my many attempts at recreating Amberleadavis' PPS.
I see a goodly amount of R&K's Helianthus which I often use to warm things up a little.
Noodler's Black is a given. I often add this for permanence in a mix.
The rest, well, who knows  .

Lovely color, Tas! Unfortunately, if it becomes a hit, it will be almost impossible to reproduce. A new "Unobtanium" ink.

All the Best.

That looks like a lovely color, I'd love to try it out, hope I'm not too late? Will you send a sample to Curaçao?

What you do with failed mixes and unsatisfactory purchases sounds a lot like what I'll do with my "Dregs" bottle... and it may well be that what you have there may resemble what's in one of mine...

a fountain pen is physics in action... Proud member of the SuperPinks

PM me you details. It would be my pleasure.

Like you, I had one bottle and called it blue dregs . . . that ended up becoming part of Teeling Mix. I just had enough one day. I am cutting back. Honest.

This is really cool ! And the resulting ink looks fabulous.

I switch inks regularly, and often have some drops left over in my pens. From now on, these leftovers will go in a mixing jar, instead of down the drain. I'm not hoping for as lovely a result as you got, but who knows ... maybe I'll get lucky ;-)

At the very least, it'll be dark and readable. I think I like the surprises just as much as those colors I agonize over before buying.

Drop me a line, I'll sling you a sample vial full. It's slate gray right now, but I've a bunch of Monteverde Horizon going in later from a pen that needs flushed.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
