Need Help In Dating The Vintage Lami Safari

Hello,

I have stumbled across a vintage Lamy pen I cannot properly identify and date. Any information on production year, collectibility and value of the pen will be greatly appreciated.

I am unable to post any photographs as of right now, but if necessary, they will be posted as soon as I am able to.

It's a yellow Lamy Safari fountain pen, with a black clip. The nib is painted black, but there is no logo on it. I suppose there was a time when Lamy did not laser etch their nibs? When did they start etching nibs with nib size and logo? This one is completely black.

As for the color, it appears a darker shade of yellow than the current yellow Lamy Safari with a chrome clip is, but as I do not have on to compare it to, I am not one hundred percent certain about this.

The box it comes in is not the modern carton box with cutouts, it's much simpler, textured black box, with a Lamy logo and an elastic band on it.

Seeing the Safari model was introduced in 1980 I suspect a 'vintage' one would be an impossibility!

 

Take this with a pinch of salt until the real Lamy heads appear, but I think the two early launch models were a kind of pea green soup colour and a kind of greenish, mustard yellow (which I guess explains the name). I have seen early boxes, which are either faux metal or card with a double plastic end. Both are bigger than the black cardboard box which I think is more recent. If you had an original launch model with its original box in good condition it might make a decent price among more serious collectors, but being so recent I suspect it would need to be in really excellent condition to garner interest.

I usually say that "vintage" has to be older than me, and I was definitely born many years before the first Lamy Safari was issued. :D

 

Lamy makes steel and black nibs, but both are always etched. There was an LE yellow Safari with black clip. Whether it always had a black nib or not I don't know.

 

The fact that the one you've seen is a different shade of yellow and doesn't have an etched nib would make it one to steer clear of for me.

 

There is also the possibility of someone taking a black clip from one Safari and putting it onto another cap in order to make it look like an LE.....

I have an older Yellow Safari with the black clip and black nib.

It is a darker yellow than the current Yellow with silver clip and nib.

But, the nib is inscribed "LAMY" and the nib size.

I can't explain why the nib on the pen at which you are looking is unmarked.

Yes, earlier Safaris had unmarked black nibs. No idea when they changed.

Hello again,

Many thanks for the input. Upon consulting few Safari collectors and this handy guide - https://www.fountainpennetwork.com/forum/topic/90367-lamy-safari/ , I have come to conclusion that this is indeed a genuine third generation Lamy Safari, in early yellow color, made in 1994. (so that does at least makes it older than me, if not you guys :D ).

Also, I have borrowed an actual yellow Safari with the chrome clip, and the older model for some reason seem noticeably heavier and more durable. When inspecting the disassembled parts of the third gen versus the fourth, all beautifully gathered in the guide above, it appears that Lamy removed few brass parts, and changed it with plastic ones, as a cost saving measure.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
