Hello From A Newbie

Hello fellow fountain pen enthusiasts!

I have been lurking for a while, reading all your excellent and interesting posts to learn about fountain pens and decided to join and say hello.

I have always just used any old pen tbh but lately got into lamy safari fountain pens and was blown away by the loveliness of them! I bought a Matt black one, then a shiny one for OH, then got a pink one for waterproof ink and wash drawing, and just found a lovely petrol one which I treated myself to too.

I love the retro-ish design and the feel of it. The quality too as these days there are so many things you buy that just drop to bits! Not to mention all the cool colours. Note to self: I must not buy any more! *Google's 'lamy special edition 2019'* lol!

Anyway I just wanted to stop buy to say hi and thank you to the fountain pen community for this forum and it's advice.

Needless to say I am now interested in inks and after much deliberation, have bought a bottle of Noodler's bulletproof ink to draw with (so I can do urban sketching and watercolours). So far so good, a little nib creap but nothing to worry about as I read a few horror stories. Also the ink dries fast on moleskine sketchbooks so perfect for my purposes.

I am looking forward to hearing about everyone's pen stories and think this forum is great, so friendly and helpful. I watch the Goulet pen videos on YouTube too and would like to give a pilot preppy a go to put an o ring and silicone grease to convert it but the USA postage is high and I'm a bit reluctant to buy pens off eBay as I've heard there are a lot of fakes around. No matter, I've enough to be getting on with for now.

All the best from lamyliz :)

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
