Waterman Night And Day?

If you were offered an almost new aforementioned pen (not sure of nib and colour yet) for £250 minimum, would you take it?

My sister has one for sale she's willing to sell me before she posts it online and I'm umming and ahhing. It would be my first Waterman but I really wanted to get an Aurora 88 (or try and get an 88) on payday as I won't have enough to do both.

I am also concerned it's a weightier pen than the ones I like such as MB 146 and TWSBI eco.

Would this be the Exception model, in the Night and Day finish? Seems like you can get it for a bit less on ebay... Looks like a nice pen, not crazy about the design.

I'm not too sure and neither is she. She's bringing it up this weekend for me to try out but she said it's weighty (which puts me off).

I think, unless it really wows me, I might pass and just offer to sell it for her

I'm not absolutely sure but there are two versions of one of these Exception pens: thinner and thicker. Both will be completely different to the Montblanc 146 and the TWSBI Eco

While I love my Exception Night and Day, I think -- given your predeliction for Montblanc 146 -- you would be happier with an Aurora 88. It is much lighter in weight, and mine is a great writer.

I have the pen in hand and it's the thicker exception I believe.

And it is rather weighty. She's leaving me the pen to try for a few weeks but I do think I'm going to pass on this one in favour of the aurora.

Thanks for the suggestions folks.

You will love the Aurora. Much lighter than the Waterman Night & Day and it's a piston filler to boot. I own both pens, but I use the Aurora more far more often.

Good luck on your purchase.

Awesome- thank you for your opinions. I'm very excited to get the aurora.

I like the waterman but I'm not sure it's £200 nice.

I'd concur with other posters here and your own thoughts re the Exception. Be mindful that the Aurora nib will be 'night and day' compared to the MB 146 etc and especially the Waterman, which should have been glass smooth.

I love both Waterman and Aurora, but the Exception was not their finest hour even in the modern era. If you want a modern Waterman with superb nib and much better balance/weight, check out the MAN 200, which came in a much more flashy 'Night and Day' finish. Mine weighs about 35 grams, so maybe 10g more than a 146, rather than the 55 odd grams of a large Exception.

Good to know - thank you aggoo.

I think I'll put an ad up for it once I've time to fully test it to ensure no skipping etc (though so far I've experienced none).

It is very smooth in my opinion - but my sister says she has had a few hard starts (though she is not sure if that is due to her fear of putting too much pressure on it). I have had no experience of hard starts.

I'll keep the MAN200 on my want list.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
