How Many Bottles Are Too Many?

So I've been buying bottles of ink this morning (I've bought 4 so far) and as I was buying, I think I added about 15 to my watchlists over various sites.

My sister commented recently that I have enough ink already to last me a lifetime. So I'm curious - do you know how many bottles you have?

I have got appx. 15. Which is too much. How do I know? Because now I HAVE TO buy a pen with a BB nib to realistically use all the ink I do not quite love (about 8 bottles of 15) in a reasonable period of time.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

Interesting - I am approaching 15 (actually might already be there! I haven't checked lately).

When you say you don't quite love - is it the colours, or the way they write that you don't like, just out of interest?

I think I just love to see the bottles on the shelf as much as actually using them.

When I start uni again in October and go to tutorials, I might just take a different bottle with me each time to try and use some of them up :lticaptd: . The only one I've nearly finished is a MB Royal Blue.

Some of us have heavier ink habits. I go through a 30ml at least once a week.

But then I use my pens all day every day.

Honestly 15 bottles is perfectly fine. It all depends on how much you actually use. And how much you enjoy using many inks.

Those inks I do not quite like are either inks I got as a bargain (like Pelikan Edelstein Smoky Quartz for 3.5 quid a bottle) or colours boring to me (Pilot Blue-Black) or colours actually very nice but not (or ale no longer) very appealing to me (Diamine Asa Blue, Pelikan 4001 Dark Green and several more).

Also there are bottles and bottles. Are 15 bottles of 80ml Diamine a lot? Yes, perhaps a bit much for a normal user. Are 15 bottles of 30ml Diamine a lot? Wouldn't say so.

Just a little advice: there are many, really many nice inks, but only few are exceptional.

I have twelve bottles, four of which I won't replace when I finish them, for one of the following reasons:

  • Appearance. The ink is not quite the shade I expected it to be or has an unattractive look on certain papers.
  • Behavior. The ink does not flow well.

I write a lot of fiction and poems by hand so maybe I can explain away my ink addiction to a necessity ha.

I do have some I don't particularly love so will not replace.

I have a lot of ink. Mind you my ink collection is nowhere near Amber's league but I have more ink than I can expect to use in my lifetime. 15 bottles is not too much unless, of course, they are all the same color or they are all gallon bottles. You have variety and that is part of what makes the hobby (obsession?) fun.

I do occasionally finish bottles (including a 4.5 oz bottle of Nikita as well as Fireball, Visconti blue, and Ottoman rose) but some have gone years without being used. Eventually I will donate some to friends and toss the ones that go bad (expletive deleted PR black cherry). Inksters who survive me will get the rest when I no longer need them.

If the amount of ink bothers you there are always samples. 2 mL is consumed pretty fast.

Enjoy the colors.

You don't need to explain. If you had a 'coffee to go' every day for the cost of a 30 ml bottle of Diamine nobody would comment on that cost either, right?

Get as many bottles as you want and stop worrying about other people's opinion about that. :P

If you are emptying bottles regularly, or in the process of doing so, than you don't have too many, if you have around 62-65 bottles as I do without having emptied one in 11 years, than yes you have too many...and should probably focus on emptying a few.....well wait I did just empty a 30ml bottle of Diamine Umber.....whew...progress......

When ink addiction is treated like coffee addiction within society, we can all breathe a little easier I suppose. :)

Such is the case with the posts of "what is your favorite ink?" and "How many pens do you have inked at one time?"....

Perhaps FPN has reached a plateau in creation of purely novel topics, all are somewhat related to what has been posted previously....

I have about 40 bottles of ink and probably twice as many samples.

The only time I feel bad about it is when I think about how they are organized. All piled up on a single shelf, so if I want a particular ink I may need to dig it out first.

Otherwise, it all gets used from time to time. I write less these days (work notes went all electronic a while back) but I keep at it.

Oops my bad- I'll admit i didn't do a search to see if the question had been asked.

It was just a slow boring day at work and I was buying ink and just wondered

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
