Nos 8440 Nib - Should I Use It?

Having read all the previous posts, I'm stepping back from mine.

Right of ownership trumps all other considerations. And the experience of writing with such a rare nib is one that's enjoyed by few these days.

I'm a "medium" nib fan myself, and chose to write with the first 6668 nib I acquired. It turned out to be a great experience, as that point writes and flows like a sweet dream; so who am I to advise another to do something different?

You can always clean it up afterwards, and it'll still be a rare nib, eh?

Or accept Gweimer1's offer, and have the best of both worlds.

 

PS. BTW, nice catch at a good price, sez me.

You got the box?

 

For the 6668? Never seen one with or in a box. Only barenekked or on a prototype pen. You got a box for one? I sure would like to see what that looks like ... if you have one.

I was counting on you to have the box. I fortunately have both the 6668 and 8999 nibs but no box...

'99.

What's an 8999?

Admittedly, I'm only really interested in an 8440 in case my husband doesn't like any of the EF nibs I have, and thinks they're still "too wide". Mostly I'm trying to get a complete set of 9xxx nibs to see which ones I like and don't like. At this point, I'm missing a 9314M, a 9312, and the (possibly mythical, and possibly just a typo) 9650. And of course the 8440.

It's easy for any one of us to say "I would use it", but when push comes to shove, would we really? (I do think I would, but you never know....)The OP has three of this very uncommon nib. Two currently in a state where they cannot be used at present. One solution has been presented and is very good - mount the orphan onto a new feed and hang onto the NOS one. To possibly be used at a later date.

Like others have said, it is the owner's choice. That said and I understand the nib is rare. In this case, does rare mean better?

For the record, I still have not used it. Since I got it, I have acquired two others that are used and quite nice. I write with those instead. The unused one remains unused.

I'm late to this, but I have an 8440 and the nib & feed broke out of the nib unit (with the black collar stuck in the pen). Remounting is a thing?! I'd be interested in knowing more.

Welcome aboard!  You. may want to create a new thread to ask this question.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature.
