In La Jolla, I Stumbled Into Warwick's

As luck would have it, I found myself in San Diego for most of the last week (which by the way was in the middle of a "heat wave" with a high one day of 83 with me having left Baton Rouge at 95 with 93% humidity, so it was a "cold front" for me--but I digress). On our last day we decided to drive up to La Jolla and enjoy a scenic dinner overlooking the Pacific at Duke's. We had reservations for dinner but were early and decided to stroll around the town. We picked random parking and a random street that just happened to have the original Warwick's located not far from where we parked. In the back of my mind I seemed to remember Warwick's being mentioned as a store that had fountain pens. I convinced my wife and son to venture in and was happy to see they had a full long counter of fountain pens--a generous selection of Lamy, Waterman, Pelikan, Retro, etc. My wife went off on her own and my son and I spent our time at the pen counter. The lady working behind the counter was extremely nice and let us hold and try out a few pens that I had yet to experience. I am trying to get my son hooked further on pens so I let him pick out the pens to try. He narrowed in on a Lamy Aion and was smitten with it. I told him he needed to save up for it ( I also want to hook him on the idea that nothing is free in this world). About that time the wife strolls up and says if we don't get a move on it we would be late for our reservations--which is usually my job. A very pleasant and unexpected experience had to come to an end. So if you are in La Jolla find the Warwick's and you will not be disappointed.

Glad to hear that you visited and liked Warwick’s. It’s the one bright light for pens people in San Diego county!

It's a small world......but I'd hate to paint it. -Stephen Wright

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
