Parker Vac Missing Threads

Recommended Posts

From my parts and pieces box, I resurrected a 1940s Vacumatic in golden pearl. The cap I have for it will not thread onto the barrel. It appears that the threads on the barrel are gone. The cap does slide on but of course will not stay in place. Does anyone know if I can use a thin O ring as a seal so that the cap would seal and stay in place when stored with ink in it? I am thinking that it might work even if not perfectly.

I restored the fill system and it work perfectly. The nib that was on the pen was missing the end of one tine. I trimmed the fine nib into about a .8 - 1.0 stub and after polishing, the pen writes wonderfully. The pen is definitely user grade so I don't want to spend a lot of money restoring it. I would like to be able to fill and then cap when not in use. Currently, I am just dipping and cleaning after each writing session.

Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

No external threads at all, right? I think that its likely that the barrel for an Imperial Vacumatic, which had the threads on the end of the section instead of on the barrel. The Imperial Vac has a metal cap that looks much like a 51 cap, but has threads down at the end just before the inner cap.

I'll trade a standard barrel for this one....

There is evidence of threads on this barrel, just worn down to where they do not engage with the threads inside the cap. Not an Imperial Vac.

That can often be fixed.

I would be leery of trying to use an 0-ring. It would tend to shift, and the outward pressure could damage the cap.

Have you tried another cap on the pen, or the cap on another pen?

Yes, the cap works just fine on other vacs of that period. Other caps won't engage with the worn threads on the barrel. I doubt that this is the original cap, but it is in good condition with the blue diamond on the clip and a "wedding" band. I guess I could obtain a replacement barrel. What would be the cost (approx.) to restore the threads? Thanks for your help.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
