Greetings From County Durham

Good evening all, from County Durham in the northeast of England - though I'm a Welshman, as my flag will reveal if I've managed to set it up properly. I'm a relative newcomer to fountain pens. Since about 1980 I have used other writing implements or typed, and then I bought a new Parker Sonnet a couple of years ago to try to resurrect my handwriting. Then I discovered there were vintage sonnets, and I now have a small collection of them. I've decided to take things more seriously and join the FPN. I was prompted to do this by (re)discovering the old Parker I used while I was a student in the 1970s. I'll try to post some photos and requests for assistance in the relevant place.

Hi Peter it is so good to see someone from C.O. Durham I am a Geordie who emigrated to Adelaide Australia in 1962 from Boldon Colliery How the hell I discovered Pens is beyond me but I did and I have many in my collection and discovered a Brand called Jinhao who are also the makers of Baoer these pens are made of Solid Brass and are

renowned for their smooth nibs and what is the best part are one of the most affordable pens on the market,I used to Edit their pens for years but now Edit a very large Japanese website all for FREE , Geordies are renowned for being DAFT.I am a retired Football Coach aged 88 years my Favorite team is Sunderland and had the pleasure of

being asked to invite them to play South Australia the year after they won the FA Cup in 1973 because Alex

Hastings ex Captain of Sunderland in 1937 was living in Adelaide as well and was Chairman of the SA soccer federation and I became the championship Manager.I was credited recently with having formed and coached the First

Ladies team .in australia Called Adelaide University, who now have 5 teams in different leagues.I will be happy

to assist you in any way that I can re Pens. please don't hesitate to ask questions I will do my best to answer

them,Jinhao make a good pen to collect, let me recommend one which I had the pleasure of Naming it is The Abalone pen which will enhance your collection you should get it for about $15.00 try not to pay more.Regards. Bryan

Hello Peter and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Many thanks to all of you who have welcomed me! Good to hear that there are Geordies living in Adelaide (one, at least). Boldon is just down the road, no colliery any more though. Cheers all.

Hi Peter I spent 12 years at the Coal Face of Boldon Colliery and played Football for Boldon Villa and

had the pleasure of being invited to sign for Charlton Athletic but because I was adopted and my Father would not give me my Birth Cert until I was 18 I sadly missed out but played for a famous team by the name of

South Shields ex Schoolboys the team that produced Sir Stanley Mortenson of England Fame.My Australian Doctor

named David Banks who is in Boldon at the moment on Holiday tells me that His Dad was Born in Boldon Colliery I

am sure he is having a wonderful time, regards to everyone who remembers me Bryan Atkinson

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
