Piston Filler Project

This is a pen that had been a long time coming for me. I got a great deal on a Pelikan M800 nib, and I figured I should build a pen around it. I decided to make a piston filler, because, well...they're cool B) The body and section are vintage cellulose acetate, with black acrylic cap threads and clear acrylic ink window. I built most of the body and piston mechanism several months back, but it lay idle since I got busy with other projects. This past weekend I decided to finish it up, as I had some new techniques I wanted to practice, and thought this pen would be good to practice them on. The cap is black acrylic with a finial made from the vintage material. The clip was sculpted from a thicker piece of material than I usually use, because I wanted to add some visual weight to it. The cap is one piece construction, and the bands are swaged on. I really like this method.

I'm super happy with how it came out, and it's been my edc pen. Now I want a full rhodium plated nib in EF though, so I will probably replace the nib eventually. The pen is a perfect size for me, as I'm not a fan of the giant oversize pens. This one is around 5" long when capped, and fits inside my shirt pocket easily.

I love it! Your designs are wonderful.

Thanks! Design is a big deal to me. I think it's easy to use flashy materials, but proportion and shape are a lot more difficult to nail down.

I agree and your filling systems look great as well.

Stunning!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

wow . thats impressive. You are focused and with the art touch. How did you manage this. got your own precision laith ?

Thank you. I made all the components, except for the nib, on my metalworking lathe. The clip was hand fabricated by me as well.

I like how you used the same material for the barrel and section.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
