New Decoband

Hi there!

Been collecting pens for a while. Ive tried just about everything except an eversharp. The new decoband intrigues me. I like large pens with huge nibs and this pen looks to fit the bill. For you guys out there who own one, whats the build quality like? Would you say its on the level of montblanc or high end sailors?

Thank you

The build quality of these pens is excellent and the packaging is exquisite. In addition, the nib and the red ebonite feed are very special and quite different from anything else available in the market.

I concur. You will not be disappointed. I am amazed at the quality of mine. Fantastic customer service too. I have an Amalfi Blue. Which one are you thinking of?

Thanks guys! I was looking at some of the celluloid models from the magnificent 7 series. The rosewood also looks really nice with the red feed.

Fantastic review btw zaddick. 👍👍. Really well done

From the Review it appears as if you are paying for things you may not want; ink, a pen sock, the huge box.

I would prefer to get, and pay for, just the pen.

Which probably wouldn't be too much. Maybe $50 at most.

Ink is rather useful since you can use it in the pen, and you buy separately anyway from other brands.

I'd rather have nice presentation than to save insignificant amount (in context of the cost of the pen).

1) IMHO your $50 estimate is very low, but still, why pay anything for something that I don't want? Try buying a similar lacquered, padded, and faux-leather (?) lined wood box for $50.

2) I have ink, lots of ink, more than I need in colors that I want. Why pay for more ink, in a color I don't want, that I won't use?

3) If this was the only pen I had then that big lacquered box may make a good "presentation" case, but not if you have other pens.

I saw one box selling for similar amount, that's where the estimate came from. I imagine when you order like Wahl-Eversharp (number of boxes), you can actually get it for even cheaper.

Point taken regarding ink. But I'm sure your retailer would be happy to Switch it for any other ink which you like that costs the same.

Anyway, they have dropped the large boxes, now they use smaller boxes. Cost remains same - $875.

1) If the box sold for that price that may mean something. Same box? Same quality and materials?

2) The point is not what Wahl pays for the box, it is what they charge you for the box. They have to sell at a higher price to cover all their other costs (shipping, labor, insurance, power, real estate, etc etc) or they lose money.

3) I don't need more ink! Why do I have to pay for any ink? Even if it is a color I like?

4) So you are saying that they raised the price on the pen because they are now shipping in a cheaper box!

Hey, if you like the pen buy it. Pay whatever you want to for it. Your pen, your money. I have paid more for a pen that I wanted.

But, as I originally said, I would prefer to get, and pay for, just the pen at the price of just the pen.

I asked Syd at a pen show about the box for the Decoband and he said it costs $8.00

Old Big Box or new little box?

So he will sell those Big Boxes for $8?

I ordered the decoband froma retailer and asked for the old bigger box. They said that it's possible and I proceeded to pay for it. Before paying, I gave them a deadline of 1st October to deliver.

28th September: I get an email from the retailer that wahl-Eversharp has sent the box, but no pen. Even the box is wrong as they have sent magnificent seven box. Box can be shipped, but pen will have to be sent later.

Better management needed at the company. If they can't provide the bigger box which they originally released, I'll probably cancel.

I bought the new version 18 k nib rosewood ebonite decoband when I travelled to Kobe Japan. It was inconvenient to carry the huge heavy unnecessary box when keeping moving although the box is beautiful.

These giant boxes make reselling a problem: if you don’t have original box, you get a bit worse price for the pen. If you do have the giant box, it costs more to ship. Not to mention that you waste a lot of space to store them.

Please note that Syd will provide the small, light size box if you request it....I did on my most recent Decoband and I'm glad I did....

It's nice that they give box options. Though many don't want a giant fancy box, I can see why someone might prefer that, especially if it's a gift for a special occasion and is given to a person who is not really in the world of fountain pens. The fancy box would make it look more "worthy" B) They might just have this one and only pen to cherish.

Agreed.....

And please note that the black lacquered wood presentation box is nicely made and has a very classy look to it, like a grand piano.

And besides holding the pen inside, it also has a depression inside for a bottle of W-E ink.

The new Decoband is a nice relaunch. I even think the filling system is a rebirth of the vintage too. The rosewood is for me the most stunning. That's only because the rest of the beautiful celluloid mostly reminds me too much of Omas. These are iconic Omas celluloids. There are a few new resin finish that are excellent. But the rosewood, or red ebonite, is a classic, used so extensively in vintage pens, so for me it seems very appropriate. They all look awesome. My least favourite part is the metal ring around the section at the end of nib/feed, just possible corrosion down the road, like what we see from pens from the 80's.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
