Today, I went with my wife to Michael's to pick up a 2018 planner that was on sale. For a total of $31.20 (with military discount), I walked away with:

* Rhodia DotPad N18, $4.99 (50% off one item)

* Rhodia Dot Wire N16, $5.94

* Artist's Loft 6x8 249 page journal, $5

* Artist's Loft 7x10 128 page journal, $5

* Recollections 2018 planner, $8.50

The Rhodia paper is imported by Exaclair (New York).

Interesting. In the past I haven't thought of them having really nice paper.

I think I have a $5 gift card, from having to return something a month or so back. Maybe I'll check out my local Michael's to see what they have in stock.

Thanks for the heads up!

Yes, I was really surprised to see Rhodia pads on their shelves. After making this post, I found a previous discussion on FPN about it.

At Michaels, the key seems to be watching their sale rotation and knowing all of the discount programs. For instance, I got 15% off of the non-sale items via my military discount, and 50% off one item using a coupon.

Well, I went to my local Michaels a couple of days ago. Had to ask because I didn't find them at first. And the answer is:

Yes they had them. But no, I ended up not buying any. Very limited selection of sizes, and nothing but the graph paper or the dot grid paper in the few sizes they DID have in stock.

They will not give my local discount art store, Artists and Craftsmen Supplies any competition.... That place has a pretty full range of Rhodia pads, plus IIRC some colors of Rhodiarama journals, as well as a few other brands of sketchbooks and journals (although the Indian brand of journals -- sorry, don't recall the brand name -- did not appear to have FP friendly paper). And they ALSO carry Leuchturm and Shinola journals (although neither are cheap).

If you like Rhodia graph or dot paper, wait for a sale at Michaels (and also use the sales coupons from the flyers they have in the Sunday paper. And be prepared to get asked if you want to join their rewards program (no, I really don't...).

  • 2 weeks later...

Had very positive experience at Artists & Craftsmen. Around here they carry "Fabriano" (or is it Fabiano). AND they seem to have reasonable prices and a good selection. It's also worth checking out their web site for sales and such.

I may buy a heavily reduced in price pad, but I try not to buy from them and I won't buy from a certain other closed on Sunday hobby/craft chain. I don't like either of their owners and as they both only sell discretionary income materials that can be sourced from other vendors, even if they are online only. I believe if they both lost enough customers they would both fold and some smaller, nicer local seller might enter the market and if not, the loss of a couple more big box stores might one some real estate for other businesses.

      I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

      It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

      Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

      Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

      I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
