Visconti Opera Star Dust Question- Misaligned Cap?!

Hello all!

I received yesterday a stardust pen from Canada.

The facets of the cap do not align with the facets on the body. Is that normal? It looks kinda silly like that and I thought maybe the pen is defective... I know that viscontis Quality control is awful!

I'm of the opinion that Visconti's QC problems are a little overblown, but everyone has different experiences. That being said…

I have an opera-style Visconti the and the facets line up when I really crank the cap on tight. Your pen seems outside the range of what should be acceptable for an opera pen though, so you would be in your right to contact the vendor.

The threads in a cap normally have 2-3 starting positions, is it possible that the facets line up if starting from a different position? This isn't an issue on my opera but it is an issue on some pens with patterns that carry through the barrel and cap (e.g., Omas Arco).

Sorry you're experiencing this problem; I hope the pen is a good writer.

Ive only had one issue with Visconti quality control, and thats out of 14 pens. But not having the alignment would bother me. I would contact ether your seller, or Coles of London

That pen has a hook safe cap system and you are saying each of the many (my HS has 5) positions it can be capped don't line up, or only the position with the nib pointing up as you cap does not line up the flats?

I would definitely talk with the seller about an exchange if you can't line up the flats when capped.

I didn't realize the new opera used a hook safe cap. With five starting points on the cap and four facets on the barrel, I imagine there's only one combination that lines everything up correctly. Hmmm…

I just checked a Visconti Brunelleschi, which has eight facets but the cap only has four starting points, so the cap and barrel always line up nicely. So I assume the silver dust also has four facets, if so and the cap and barrel don't line up the pen definitely needs to be sent back.

Only some Opera models use the hook safe system. The Opera Silver Dust just happens to be one of them.

You can see it I this picture

My Opera Club (C/C) uses a screw cap and the cap indexes off the section. When I screw the cap on to the body with the section removed the flats don't line up. I counted on my Homo Sapiens and it has 5 hooks for the system.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
