The shoot outs are awesome. Thank you again.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

White Ice on to of a famous European Mountain. The limited edition thing. Where the competition can not win outright the prestige will win thumbs down. Thanks for the shootout.

Somehow I missed this thread before now. I find that I actually prefer Stone of Gion, since it seems to be darker (and therefore more legible) on the page. But I suspect that in reality I need neither -- I have 2 bottles of the somewhat similarly hued Edelstein Smoky Quartz, and one or two bottles of Iroshizuku Yuma-guri.

Awesome comparison! Thank you!

I've had Stone Road of Gion on my radar for a while, and you've just proven that rather than choosing between the two, I shall have to buy both

I think that I, too, will take this path.
They're both great inks :)

Which one did you get, Detman101?  Or did you spring for both?

I picked up "Stone Road of Gion" at Penboutique earlier today. So far, I'm disappointed with it's performance, though the tone and color are marvelous.
The ink, itself, is far too dry to do any kind of flex-writing with.
I may put it in my stub-nib Delike-element and keep "Penbbs-Guilin" in my flex pen if I need a brown-family ink. It just works perfectly...even if it's super light.

Guilin is pretty much the Penbbs version of "Swan Illusion Plume". Looks exactly the same on the paper but has a nice color-shift that I'm absolutely in love with.
Goes down a dirt-green...color shifts to pinkish-brownish-gray as it dries...lovely!

This is where you want your White Lightning. With very few exceptions, the Kyoto inks perform better with a bit of wetting agent - about 1ml per 20ml. Mixed in a vial, it's enough to just dip the end of a paperclip into the WL (or whatever else is your agent of choice) and mix it into a couple of ml of ink.

Thank you thank you thank you thank you!
That was just the information I needed.
I'm writing that down on a sticky note and taping it to the bottle.
You rock!!!

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
