Advice Needed Choosing

Hi,

New here so go gentle but I need some suggestions.I am visiting the USA in October and want to take advantage of being in the states and ordering a new fountain Pen for delivery to my hotel. It would make sense for me to oreder a Pen that is made in the USA therefore. I would like to spend no more than $400 on an oversized pen with a gold nib. I would like a colourful pen and therefore not black.

I know this is a fairly broad set of choices but Im really happy to try something different,my nib choice would be fine. Forgive me if this is not the right area to post this question in.

Thanks

How long will you be on this side of "The Pond" and where will you be based? Just thinking that if possible, a visit to a Pen Show might be the best place to find your pen. Most have new and vintage pens, the Ohio Show is in early November and the Toronto Show (Scriptus) is at the end of October if you can make it North of the border. Happy travelling.

Hey Pen Lady, thanks for the suggestions, I am in New England in late October and scoured the net for shows and stores but Alas there was nothing but one store in Boston. I don’t think I’ll be able to persuade my better half to travel north while we are on our vacation as we have a pretty clear itinery. Next time I think I will plan a little better :)

Thanks Herrjaeger, I ’ll take a look to see what they have in the range.

When you look at their materials, be prepared to take notes. Their way of presenting the materials is to give you a slide show of various pens and materials. The show is rather dazzling, takes some time to watch, and at least the last time I looked at it, there was no easy way to look at a specific material: you had to go back through the slide show. Some of their pens are available through retailers in the US, with limited options on those pens, although they are considerably less expensive. One thing to note, some of their pens don’t post, if that’s important to you. Stephen Brown has reviewed at least one of their pens on YouTube. Enjoy.

You could also order Nodler's Apache Sunset and a couple other of the highest rated Noodlers inks from Gulett (sp)...perhaps a couple pens from him too. He sends bomb proof packages. :notworthy1:  I'd ordered from him delivered to my motel, and it was there when I checked in.

You could go to Inky Thoughts and start a thread of the top 5 most needed Noodler inks, and be good to go.

In reference to P. T. Barnum; to advise for free is foolish, ........busybodies are ill liked by both factions.

The cheapest lessons are from those who learned expensive lessons. Ignorance is best for learning expensive lessons.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
