Colorverse Season 4 -- All Colors

So I ordered a sample set of all the Colorverse Season 4; the set also included the Tokyo Limited Edition Hayabusa samples.

I used my trusty (small) J.Herbin glass dip pen on both Rhodia and Tomoe River paper. The results: GORGEOUS!!

First Tomoe River:

Good collection of "off-set" colours. I.e. anything but "normal, boring standards". Where did you order them from?

I got this sample set from Vanness (no affiliation): ordered it as soon as I saw it was available, and they were already down to their last 2. I don't know if others are carrying full sample sets or not.

Yes, the colors are so interesting. Some of them remind me of other colors, but when I put the other color side by side, it just isn't the same. For example, Albert looks a lot like Robert Oster Sublime or Diamine Meadow. But it isn't really either quite either of them.

And, not to cause a run on the color, but Hayabusa (non-glistening) really looks like Lamy Dark Lilac: not exactly, but close.

Might be the wrong topic but honestly, why is the Colorverse inks quite pricey?

I believe that it is in the same price brackets as Sailor exclusive inks and the GvFC

Just a side note, I do like the colors they present and the names are pretty cool

You are not just paying for the ink... You are paying for the cute bottles (glass) and the packaging and ALL the marketing material they add (stickers, booklets, etc)... It gets pricey with all the add ons.

For me, I rather pay half the price and they can keep the add ons. But that is just me. ;)

Now we're four. I want the ink and no non-ink. If I ever do happen to buy it (the ink), maybe I'll send them the add-ons back and tell them to keep that stuff.

They sure look pretty!

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

They are pretty indeed. And in all fairness Colorverse make very good inks, I think. Most of those I tried being on the wetter side. But then, yes, they are pricey, and yes part of that price is for add-ons; the research for the inks’ names and themes, the bottles, the packaging, the papers..

I don’t care much about these either but I think it’s what makes the Colorverse experience something slightly different to getting any other ink. Also, and quite unfortunately, it all participates in making these inks very easy to buy on impulse.

I guess it’s the same as with pens, after all, where more-or-less fancy materials, narratives, special editions, deluxe packaging, etc. please some and annoy or deter others - in the end all we really need is a nib and a feed.

Back to the topic; the season 4 inks; I was on the Colorverse website a few days back and I haven't bought any! yet.. I have also resisted getting any of their Opus88 series so far. Quite a broad choice of colours in this series, but none of them is love at first sight. I do like the idea of having the same ink with and without glistening.

For some folks, part of the allure is the double bottle concept, especially when there are two different colours in the pair.

Yeah, I was expecting that the bottle is one definite factor and I didn't know that they had those add on prices.

Maybe I will buy one of their colors if I have some extra cash lying around under the bed

I ran some quick math, and yes, the Colorverse inks are in the same bracket as Sailor, GvFC, and Pilot. But given its behavior and properties, that seems to be where it belongs.

I was surprised to hear people blame the Colorverse price on the add-ons when the Bungubox inks (for example) are nearly twice as expensive with no add-on, not even a "luxury" bottle.

Colorverse 65 ml at $36 is 0.55 per ml (big bottle in two color set)

Colorverse 80 ml at $36 is 0.45 per ml (one color only)

Bungubox 50 ml at $43 is 0.86 per ml

Montblanc 50 ml at $43 is 0.86 per ml (many of the special colors)

(I know that one can often get some of these for less, but I used the most standard pricing found. I thought one of the main ink purveyors used to have an ink cost comparison, but I can't find it now.)

So yes, the Colorverse ink is expensive, but xinglongneo is correct: there are plenty of other inks in this price bracket.

And I do love the colors!

This is all to make me feel better about breaking down and buying the Able and Miss Baker set, my favorite of the new season!

I am sorry, but you are quite wrong. You are comparing apples to tomatoes.

To be a fair comparison, you need to take Bungbox at the time that was newly on the market. At that time, you could get the fantastic and unusual colours (at that time) with great sailor behaviour and the most amazing glass bottle (diamond bottle) for less than $20 USD shipped to my door.

So, if you more than double the colorverse price, than you might have a more accurate depiction. Also, nowadays I don't find the colorverse colours that unique. Mind you, my collection of inks is extensive. But that is another reason I don't feel the need to jump into this expensive bandwagon. And yes, I find the bottles very cute, but still not worth the price.

P.S. To add, for the newbies of the hobby, then yes... there are a lot of expensive inks out there. I think the comment about price, come from the "seasoned" hobbyist like me... We use to pay much less for amazing inks.

I would also like to chime in to this topic.

I have an extensive collection of fine inks, as well, and at the beginning I felt tempted for some of the colours offered by Colorverse, some quite unique.

Having overcome the initial resistance to the price/new brand proposition, I have to say that Colorverse ink quality and behaviour is up there with my favourite Sailor or KWZ.

in my opinion, it fully merits the asking price and some of the offerings are really unique... Black Hole, Vortex Motion, Quasar, Dark Energy.

Some people in this thread are forgetting these prices bring you 80ml of ink and to be honest one cannot invoke the starting price of Bungbox, back then to actual market place and market prices of today. The environment is not the same and the "Go to market" strategies are not the same.

I totally understand and actually agree with you. I remember not understanding why people thought akkerman ink was expensive. They were 150 ml bottles and cost per ml was dirt cheap. Needless to say, I have many colours on those gorgeous bottles.

My comment about starting price on Bungbox was to just to make a point that comparing the start up price of Colorverse and the overinflated price that now Bungbox has was not completely accurate. In fact, I totally stopped buying Bungbox when they switched the bottle and double the price. It was no longer "worth it" for me.

But it is what it is..... In another 5 years, Colorverse might double its price, and people new to the hobby at that time will think is just "market" price.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
