My latest pen:

Sorry for the terrible smartphone photo, which doesn't do the maki-e justice. It's gorgeous! I've wanted a starry sky pen for a while (my husband is a gravitational astrophysicist) and this does that splendidly.

I think I may have been seduced away from Nakaya! I adore my Naka-ai in aka-tamenuri, but I merely like the nib (it's a soft fine; I've also had a BB stubbed by CFP, and I have had a couple Platinum pens). I love the Namiki's nib, which is so far is smooth and utterly pleasurable to write with.

That is a beautiful pen

How does everything else compare between your Nakaya and Namiki?

Thanks for sharing!

The Namiki is a bit heavier, although both are still fairly light pens, which is my preference. (I find heavier pens tiring to write with for long sessions.) I actually think the shape of the Naka-ai is exquisite in its simplicity and balance, and prefer it, although the Namiki's cigar shape is fine and it works beautifully as a canvas for the maki-e. I'm agnostic on clips; my Naka-ai is clipless while the Namiki has a perfectly functional clip.

I would say that the Naka-ai feels lighter and better balanced in my hand, but the Namiki isn't unbalanced. The Naka-ai has a soft fine nib, which feels responsive and a little bouncy to write with, in a pleasant way, although it also has a smaller sweet spot. It's not a flex nib and you won't get any kind of line width variation. I used to have one with a stubbed BB (from CFP) that I also found very pleasant and beautiful to write with, although the disadvantage was that due to the small capacity of the Nakaya being a converter pen, it ran through ink pretty quickly. (In retrospect I should have switched to cartridges.) The Namiki has a medium nib, which probably contributes to its greater feeling to smoothness, and there's no bounce to it; it's not only a nail functionally but feels like one, but that's fine. If I wanted flex, I'd be using one of my vintage pens or a dip pen.

It is a stunning pen. I have a Moonlight Raden,it is absolutely gorgeous, because the ramen is bigger the effect is visible from a greater distance than the other models. I'm toying with the idea of a New Namiki. Undecided between the Shooting Star Raden and the Milky Way. Reading what you have written the Milky Way does look appealing. Does it come with a two-tone nib?

I confess I sort of covet a Yukari Nightline...maybe someday. The Moonlight sounds gorgeous! I can't speak for the Shooting Star, but the Milky Way does indeed have a two-tone nib.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
