Greetings All~

Re-entry to the pen world has been a long time coming. My last fountain pen writing project was over 40 years ago, and that pen has long since disappeared.

In 2000 I bought a Montblanc LeGrand Rollerball, which has performed flawlessly, and so I went back to Montblanc for a fountain pen. In my excitement I neglected to consider inflation, and sticker shock hit hard! Additionally, the Montblanc shop only offered a LeGrand fountain pen with medium nib for trial use. No other was inked, which struck me as rather unreasonable, so I decided to buy used. The plus to the shop visit was I decided I wanted to start with a fine point nib and thinner pen, so the time and distance wasn't a complete waste.

I'm awaiting delivery of my pen and ink as of this writing and can't wait to get started again. I think I'll also be purchasing a broad nib pen, but it'll be later this fall. I ordered both bottle ink and cartridges to try both.

Are there any other supplies I should purchase at this time? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome!

Just so you know, although I like the one [1] MontBlanc I have, there are other fountain pens on the market. Some lower priced may surprise you with their quality. Don't limit yourself to one brand unless and until you have something to compare.

Be well and enjoy it here!

Hello and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome from North Carolina! Like others have said, there are many well-writing fountain pen brands out there, ranging in price from a few dollars to a few thousand. If you're willing to do some reading there are quite a few reviews and recommendations out there!

That being said, if Montblanc is your flavor, don't fix what ain't broke!

Enjoy your stay.

Thank you all for your welcoming posts!

To explain my choice a bit...... I'm not wedded to Montblanc, but my 2000 Rollerball has been such a joy to own and use that I automatically decided to buy a Montblanc fountain pen to kick off my re-entry into fountain pen world. In fact there are two Montblanc fountain pens on my list...

Part of the purpose of joining this forum was to educate myself about fountain pens, writing styles, papers, etc. In fact, from what I've read here thus far, consider it an absolute certainty there will be multiple pens! :)

I'll post a photograph of my newbie pen in the Montblanc forum when it arrives.

I forgot to mention, and I feel guilty for forgetting (sorry, Parker pen), my 1972 Parker 75 Sterling Silver Crosshatch ballpoint pen. It was a gift to my Father that Christmas, and has been mine for quite a few years now. It was well used, and it shows, but the memories insure it will always be my most valuable writing instrument.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
