Hello From The Netherlands

Hello there!

I re-discovered the joy of hand-writing when I stumbled upon the fountain pen I purchased 30 years ago. Some fresh ink, some exercise, then reading articles on the internet and viewing YouTube movies. And now, a month or two later, I find I really enjoy it.

The pen that got started again is a Shaeffer Grand Connoisseur, with an extra fine nib. Writes beautifully, and actually I didn't need another pen, but once you start surfing the Internet, well, you all know what happens next.

So I bought another pen, some better paper and some inks, and now I am practising handwriting every evening. I am a lefty, and clear handwriting requires considerable extra effort when compared to righties I guess, but that doesn't matter. It's for fun, not a job.

Right now I have the Shaeffer Grand Connoisseur, a Mont Blanc 146 and a Platinum #3776, all great pens, all purchased new. More then I need, but.. a relative, sensing my enthusiasm, bought two Sailor 1911 Realo's for me the other day during his visit to Japan. It's overkill, told him not to, to much, too expensive, but it appears I am not very good at persuading people . Will get them when he returns.

The picture shows my current pens: all classic black with gold trim, that's how I like them.

Hello Thymen and welcome to FPN, from Cape Town, South Africa.

You should take a look at the lovely stuff your neighbours are building. Google search for "Conid" in Antwerp. Their Kingsize Bulkfillers are fantastic. You can get them to custom grind a nib for you.

Write with joy.

To sit at one's table on a sunny morning, with four clear hours of uninterruptible security, plenty of nice white paper, and a [fountain] pen - that is true happiness!

Welcome to FPN from North Carolina, USA. Enjoy your stay!

Whenever you are fed up with life, start writing: ink is the great cure for all human ills, as I found out long ago.

I peeked at the Conid pens.... but these will not be within my budget for quite a while.

They do look gorgeous though..

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
