I suppose it can be fixed but you will always notice a colour difference. It will take quite some time before it will be back.

I would try a "kintsugi" style repair, fill it with black urushi to have a sort of Negoro lacquer or a gold repair. As Catherine writes the color of a newly lacquered part will never match the color of the pen.

That would be an interesting repair ! It is a bit of a mind switch here in Europe but it would add a certain extra to the pen.

The kintsugi repair would be interesting indeed but I think I will contact Sailor to see what they can do. The other option is to sell it as is. It is fully functional and the damage is only cosmetic.

Here a some more pics of the damaged pen

Dang dawg, that's gnarly. Repair traditionally. It will look cool. Some Nakaya are already sold that way like distressed jeans.

Maybe some thoughts about Japanese aesthetic - since it is a Japanese pen

Yô no Bi
Yô no bi’ is an expression from the Japanese folk craft tradition and means ‘beauty through use’.
It is perfectly represented by Negoro lacquer.

Mottainai
Mottainai, [mottainai]) is a Japanese term conveying a sense of regret concerning waste. The expression „Mottainai!“ can be uttered alone as an exclamation when something useful, such as food or time, is wasted, meaning roughly „what a waste!“ or „Don‘t waste. In addition to its primary sense of „wastefulness“, the word is also used to mean „impious; irreverent“ or „more than one deserves“.

Mottainai is an old Buddhist word, which has ties „with the Shinto idea that objects have souls.
Mottainai has been referred to as a tradition, a cultural practice, and an idea which is still present
in Japanese culture, which has become an international concept.. Mottainai in Japanese refers to
more than just physical waste (resources). It is even used to refer to thought patterns that give rise
to wasteful action. Grammatically, it can be used in Japanese as an exclamation („mottainai!“) or as an adjective phrase („it feels mottainai“).

There is no plural form. The collection of mottainai things could be called mottainai koto. As an exclamation („mottainai!“) it means roughly „what a waste!“ or „Don‘t waste. An English equivalent is the saying „waste not, want not.“ A more elaborate meaning conveys a sense of value and worthiness and may be translated as „do not destroy (or lay waste to) that which is worthy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
