Looking For A Dark, Dark Brown....

What pen have you used it in? Doyou looks very dark in my Pelikan gushers and not dark at all (=very brown) in my Pilot Custom 743 (the same nib as 823). But even in Pelikans it definitely is not black.

Well, I would answer your question this way. I used a cotton swab and passed it over a piece of white paper many times, on the assumption that it gets lighter as the ink is used up. Black all the way down.

I also diluted some in water, which usually exposes the multiple colors in an ink. Black all the way.

So I'm not sure the pen would matter. Maybe I just got a "different bottle".

But thanks,

Interesting... I certainly have pens/papers where Doyou is dark enough to look black, but I would definitely not describe it as "black all the way down". I did a quick comparison of Doyou vs Kiwa-Guro (which is my idea of "black all the way down") on the same page, including writing, smeared ink, swabbed ink, and diluted ink. Side-by-side with a true black, Doyou looks like a "brown-black" to me. This is on 28gsm copy paper, which was the whitest paper I had on hand.

As one of the people who suggested Doyou, I'm sorry if your experience is different from mine!

OK - based on many recommendations here, I bought a bottle of Sailor Jentle Doyou.

I would describe this ink as black. Not dark brown, not brown-black. Just black. Maybe a slightly warmed tone black, but no matter how much I dilute this ink in water nothing that resembles brown emerges.

The box is marked with a brown sticker and two Japanese characters, presumably Doyou (the characters match the image on web sites that sell the ink). I purchased a 50ml bottle if that makes the difference.

Did I get the right ink??

thnx,

Not black.

i own both Iro yama-guri and Sailor do-you. i do think do-you is a good choice if you looking for a dark(er) brown. but it also gives a slight more greyish tone to the brown than yama-guri.

A little late to the party, but how about Cult Pens (made by Diamine) Deep Dark Brown. I don't use it because it is so very dark - could be just the thing.

So I think I have a slightly better handle on Sailor Doyou.

Striped (swabbed) on a page by itself, it has a dark gray/black look. I don't detect any brown.

I put a couple of other inks on the page. Quink black is a cold-toned black. The Sailor ink looks completely different.

I also put some swabs of Noodlers black on the page. IMO the two inks look almost identical on the page. The both have a neutral/warm tone. Both pretty much black. Maybe (just maybe) a slight brown tone in the Sailor, but only if I squint my eyes.

An interesting ink. I can't call the Sailor Doyou a brown ink - really a black ink with a brown second cousin, once removed.

I still have more "brown" inks to try - the search goes on.

This is really weird... Would you mind adding some photos/scans, please?

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

I don't really have the equipment to do this in a way that would be informative.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
