Ottawa France Button Filler - What Is This?

Recommended Posts

Hi, Folks!

This is a pen I've been trying to identify for quite some time. Any help including ads, catalogs, patents, online references, rumors, etc, would be appreciated. Below is what I know, which is not much!

This is an Ottawa button fill fountain pen in faceted black molded plastic c. late 1940s. According to Richard Binder's Pen Glossopedia, Ottawa was a Paris, France based manufacturer of button fill fountain pens, ballpoint pens and repeater type pencils. It's 4 7/8 inches long capped and has what looks like chrome plated trim, which is quite worn. The cap and barrel are an interesting 10 sided faceted design with diamond shaped faces on the cap, barrel and blind cap. The cap top and barrel end are also faceted and come to a point. Removing the barrel end cap reveals a black plastic button that activates the pressure bar to fill the pen. The nib is stamped with a crown design over WARRANTED over 1RE QUALITE over IRISTYL. There are some faint signs of gold plating, so the nib may have been gold plate on stainless steel.

You will have found this as well probably:

Teri from PSP could possibly tell you more about the Iristyl

She has or had a pen for sale with such a nib.

Interesting. In this case there is English (WARRANTED) and French (1RE QUALITE) on the nib. I wonder what "IRISTYL" actually means and in what language?

Found some more links using this search term in Google: IRISTYL iristyl -"Iris Tyl"

I have been thinking about that metal too.

It suggests to me iridium-steel. but that's pure conjecture. Perhaps someone with metallurgical knowledge? Perhaps Francis (Fountainbel)?

I see you also posted in Pentrace on FB, perhaps that will bring something?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
