Mb 149 Meisterstuck

Hi all. A quick question. It's my 50th birthday in a few months and my family wan to club together for a present. So I'm thinking of a Mont Blanc 149 meisterstuck. Pre-owned of course. So my question is, if anyone has used one or lucky enough to own one, are they really worth it or are they over priced? Thanks in advance.

Welcome,

I think that someone will move this to where it belongs the Montblanc forum where I'm sure you'll get lots of comments.

The 149 is a lovely pen, chunky and reasonably heavy. Pre-owned is a very good idea (I would never buy one new) and you can get a real bargain with care and patience. I probably have a dozen pass through my hands in a year mainly with M nibs, but also EF and Broad nibs, so they are there to be found. But as mentioned, when this post gets moved you'll get a lot of advice I'd say.

Sorry ... Are they worth it? Depends on the condition of pen you buy and the price you pay for it.

I have several 149s, all but one bought used. They are extremely reliable and also Montblanc offers a very good service if seals for example need replacing in the future. The resin is very hard wearing and the gold plating is tough so you should fine plenty of good examples. (I also use, every day, a ballpoint and pencil in the same Meisterstucke range, both bought used, and they have given me years of service, at home and travelling.

Hi Chunya. Thx for your reply. I've seen some good examples and its either the MB or a Pelikan M1000. I'll probably end up with a Parker Vector haha. But thx again

Hi Barrie. Thx for your reply. They do look like beautiful pens I must admit. I'm still torn between the MB or a Pelikan M1000. Knowing my luck I'll end up with a Parker Vector haha. But we'll see what September brings.

I think buying one new would count as overpriced to me. I have bought 2 both used at a reasonable price (to me). I feel that a 149 is worth having and I enjoy mine. If I had to buy one at full MSRP, I probably would never have owned one.

Hi Pakman. Thanks for your reply. I agree with what you're saying. I really couldn't justify buying one new and I wouldn't dream of asking family to club together that much money. Same goes for the Pelikan M1000. Plus you have to be careful of fake 149s too. I watched a few youtube videos last night by SBRE Brown on how to spot fake 149s. Very interesting in my opinion as I'm still quite new to the fountain pen world. I will have one one day. He says in hope. Keep in touch.

Having owned/used both, I'd go with the Pelikan M1000.

Get a B nib and have a nibmeister work it to your liking and you have a pen for life.

It's hard to say worth it or not.Different people maybe have different view.Calculating the value of a thing is complicated.Especially the meaning of this thing is different for different people.I think it is the best one of the Production-flagship fountain pens.(I don't know if this is the most correct expression.I means the best fountain pens except special edition and limited special).I have 2 Mb149.i think they are really good.

Paul, I love my 149. I bought it used and agree that new is very pricey. If you buy used beware of fakes and if you buy on eBay Check reviews and return policy. Buying here, Fountain Pen Hospital, Nibs.com or the Pen Market are all very reliable. Can’t comment on the 1000 but love my 800. The 149 is a big pen and not really great carrying around in a shirt pocket, but it is the classic fountain pen. If you buy, you will almost certainly love it and if you don’t you can always sell and look for a used 1000! Good luck and happy 50th!,

Bought mine new in 2001 in the Caribbean (Grand Cayman to be precise). Paid $325 which was high for the time but it was a grail pen. Since then it has never been without ink, and I love writing with it. That said -- Would I pay $900+ for one now? Absolutely not.

I bought mine brand spanking new from the MB boutique and I love mine. It was worth every hard earned penny! Go for it, new or used. I have mine inked all the time.

It's a real pleasure to see a post from you again.

Like you, 7 out of 8 of my two 149s were purchased from Montblanc boutiques.

The eighth 149 was received as a gift from a long-time friend.

There's at least one or two 149s inked on my writing desk at all times.

Thank you for expressing what I also feel.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
