Lamy Accent: Al And Palladium Finishes The Same?

The Lamy Accent has been around since 1998. Reading the design history page on the Lamy website, we can see that it was introduced in two finishes: Palladium and Matt Black.

Today, the Accent is sold in various configurations: lacquered aluminum (the AL KK with black rubber grip and AL KW with karelia wood grip), and brilliant black lacquer (the Brilliant LD with laser grip and the Brilliant BY with briarwood grip). Some retailers still seem to have old stock (I assume) of the Matt Black models (with pearwood grip, and with palladium grip).

The ever-informative kmpn blog has a page on the Lamy Accent that lists a number of other grip models (some of which are still for sale separately from outlets like fontoplumo.nl and lacouronneducomte.nl), and seems to confirm that the finish that used to be marketed as palladium finish is the same one that is now marketed as lacquered aluminum.

It just may be inconsistent product photography over the years, but to my eye the pen body had a slightly golden hue when it was originally sold in a palladium finish, whereas the finish of the new AL KK model I just bought is pretty much a neutral grey metal. I wonder, can anyone here confirm if the kmpn blog correct? Are palladium and aluminum the same finish, or is there a difference between the two (meaning there have actually been four finishes of the Accent)?

Your impressions are correct, the older palladium and newer aluminum finishes are distinctly different and in the way you describe. I would also describe the aluminum as a tiny bit smoother.

Thanks, MCN! Do you have access to both, and if so, would it be possible to post a side-by-side photo?

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
