Penbbs #232 Ugly

lgsoltek

Recommended Posts

This ink is called "ugly" because some people decided Pantone #448C is the ugliest colour in the world (see for example here, and also this thread) and Penbbs decided to duplicate this colour in ink. However I'm sure many murky green lovers (shout out to Claudia!) will love this.

The ink itself writes very wet and smooth. Dries fast. No bleeding. Not much water resistance.

Thanks for this; I like it, it might generally be called "loden"or "muck", I had KWZ Hunter Green in my sights... But Stipula's Verde Muschiato already comes close when coming out darker, like with an EF Ambition.

As for being called ugly, one's man's green muck is elegant, while another man's gold is tacky.

I seem to recall someone saying they thought Noodlers Zhivago resembled "used motor oil..........."

I never knew how much I enjoyed these colors until I saw them on paper from my pen.

In the first linked article, the big uniform block did look pretty ugly to me, but when used as a writing ink, I think it looks nice... whether it's due to the context of using it in writing, or the way it shades, or something else, it's an interesting effect. Either way, I think it's cool that they'd make an ink out of the so-called ugliest color in the world. Maybe I'm weird, but the prospect of having a bottle of Ugly is tempting for me.

I can understand ugly. I have cleaned up after sick puppies, and it looked like that.

As an ink, though, it looks to be quite well-behaved.

Woow!! This is a beauty. I really like it. Great presentation! Any idea where to find this in Europe?

I have no idea. I "smuggled" a sample back to Europe when I was coming back from China a few days ago.

(I think Vaness in US carries Penbbs inks now?)

So it's more brown than Salamander?

I snickered at the fact that somebody named an ink "Ugly." I really like it though, as I've come to like Salamander. Of course it helps that your reviews are top-notch and show off the ink superbly!

I knew Tas and Cyber6 would love it. Probably Captain too, but I'll be avoiding it.

Fountain pens are my preferred COLOR DELIVERY SYSTEM (in part because crayons melt in Las Vegas).

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
