Charlestons Being Counterfeited? When Did This Start?

Shannon

I haven't glanced through the Waterman listings on eBay for a few months. Decided I needed to check out what Charlestons might be available. Wow. Some pretty poor fakes. A couple are listed at WTAERMAN but several are seeming straight up counterfeits. I've never noticed this before -- when did this start?

My fingers are always inky and I'm always looking for something new.  Interested in trading?  Contact me!

If it is it's very well done. While I do not own one I think it's real.

One typo does not a fako mako.

Im a passionate Charleston user and collector. I love those little pens. The one you cite does not look to be a fake.

If you have doubts, buy one from Montgomery Stationary. Their price is about the same and they are in New York.

At first glance, I thought the clip was a solid piece. I recently agreed to purchase a MB that ended up being counterfeit. Luckily I figured it out before money exchanged hands. I'm a little hyper-aware now.

What makes you think that the Charleston in that listing is a fake?

I agree it's overpriced, as I have two and I didn't pay that much for either of them, but it doesn't look like a fake to me.

List price is 185 EUR here in the Netherlands.

That typo in the title says nothing. Now if that typo would be on the nib that's different cook... (to doubledutch translate a Dutch saying)

Pictures look OK, but could be stock.

Looks like merely a typo? That seller also has the clear Pelikan m205, if that's also a fake it's a really good one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
