Another "real Or Fake" Plea

Shannon

Recommended Posts

I won this auction yesterday. I don't generally even look at MBs from Asia because of the surfeit of counterfeits, but I couldn't pass up a OB and I need a 144 to complete the line-up. To my semi-knowledgeable eye, it looks good, but I'd like to know your thoughts.

I'm not an expert but I don't see anything that screams fake. Also, I doubt that fakers would go through the hassle of making oblique broad nibs.

Agreed on the OB nib. It looks fine.

It appears authentic to me. However, fakers will go to great lengths to make their merchandise attractive.

The 144 has been expertly faked. My suggestion: Check to make sure that the nib is made of 14k gold.

I've never seen the older monotone nibs faked (yet). They tend to be great nibs. Most of the fake 144's have the two-tone nibs (or a version of them).

Buying a cartridge 144 pen is a fraught business these days, the market is awash with counterfeits - but, from what I can see, I'd say yours looks good.

Congratulations. Enjoy it.

Excellent.

Early (modern) 144 feed. Supplies a good flow. Looks like a nice set-up.

Great everyday writers, these pens.

Enjoy.

Thanks all! I appreciate the help.

I'm just getting a feel for spotting counterfeits, so am continually second-guessing myself. It's especially helpful that you all are kind enough to provide your reasoning.

It should be arriving on my doorstep in the next couple of weeks. I'm more & more excited about it.

I received a 144R with a two-tone nib but exactly the same type of feed as yours in 1991. Xmas gift from the love of my life. Your 144 appears to be in mint condition.

As soon as the picture of the feed appeared, I knew it was authentic. :)

This actually gave me goosebumps when I read it!!!

The pen was expected to be delivered on the 19th. Of course I arranged to be home for the delivery. Imagine my surprise when the post office tried to deliver it yesterday! I've rearranged my calendar to be home tomorrow for re-delivery. I'm not excited at all. ;)

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
