Pineider - La Grande Bellezza

Ghost Plane

Recommended Posts

Because it needed doing...Here is my Tiger Eye with 1.3 mm stub.

Dante del Vecchio put a nib worthy of a Montblanc 149 onto a cartridge converter pen. The body styling is reminiscent of recent Visconti models (gee, wonder why?) with magnetic closure and posting that newcomers to fountain pens will probably love. I personally loathe it as it means the cap swims around on the rear of the pen when I try to write with it posted. I really want the extra length as I hold the pen with my finger just touching the metal of the section. But then I am a miniscule fraction of his target audience.

I really wanted greater girth with such beautiful material. A piston filler would be awesome to keep up with ink usage because...WHAT AN INCREDIBLY AWESOME NIB!!! I have it in rotation with my MB Skeletons. This thing is up there with the widest and best 149 nibs I own. It is soft and bouncy; it is a true writers nib and it is completely wasted on the perfectly decent for most folks pen body.

I understand this is a major redesign coming straight out of the gate at a new pen company. So let me point out the pen body minus the nib would be 10 out of 10 from anyone else aiming to get their pens into the hands of the masses. I am not quibbling over a decent design. I am simply so overawed by that completely phenomenal nib and writing experience that I want a platform worthy of it.

Put this nib onto a big piston filler like the old Visconti Ripples or use that luscious colored material for a big bomber like a Montblanc 149 and I would buy one in every color he could dream up. Even if it meant a second mortgage. The colors are gorgeous and the material really does feel sturdy in the hand.

So what am I complaining about? The nib is simply too awesome for the pen body and filling system it is mounted on. Imagine the engine from a Bugatti Veyron was crammed under the hood of your basic US muscle car. Or a fighter plane engine bolted onto a commuter jet complete with full afterburners.

Dante said he was out to design a writers pen. He did too good of a job. It puts a nib that is simply spectacular onto a body that is within reach of those willing to shell out in the just barely over $400 USD range (with state tax & shipping) at the time of this post. I suspect they wont last long once people realize what they have.

Then Dante will design a body and filling system to keep up with this brilliant nib design. Prices will soar. And we will be on here moaning about the good old days when Pineiders were almost affordable.

Get one now, while you can. Theyre pretty. 90% of you will think theyre perfectly lovely and wonder why I am not raving more about how perfect they are for offices or classrooms with those caps that close themselves once you get the magnets close enough.

I will be saving up for his warp drive, starship version once Pineider sells enough of these to really turn him loose. I am betting he will design a filling system that holds crazy amounts of ink and doesnt require more than a simple rinse. Until then, I am enjoying this incredible nib and happy to get my hands on one.

Oh yeah. There are samples of Pineider stationary in the box. If you can tear yourself away from the pen. I have not put mine down long enough to try the paper.

Great review! Thank you so much for posting. I was wondering when someone would post a review of this stunning pen. I wanted one before, but now I want one even worse. I knew it was going to be amazing.

Alas, a negative to report. If you’re in a rush to recap while on the phone and don’t pay attention to the magnet polarities, the cap will actually repel itself from the body rather than self-capping. I came into my office this morning to find a partially capped pen.

Gentlemen, you are on your own testing pocket wearability.

German nibs by Jowo, correct?

I have absolutely no clue. All it needed for me was Dante saying he had a new nib design + Brian Goulet’s video. I saw the long tines like my beloved Ancoras + the cut out shoulders and had to try one.

Nota bene, I could care less about flex. What I crave is a soft-feeling, long-tined stub nib that is comfortable to write with for hours.

Thanks for the review and pics, GP....

The stub nib seems great.....and the pen looks nice too...understand about the cap, but would hope one gets used to it after a while.

Finally, someone who understands what I am looking for! It sounds like what I need.

The nibs are Boch. One of the regulars at the London Pen Club brought an Avatar along last weekend. Body was nothing special and I was not a fan of the magnetic cap, but the steel nib was an absolute dream, and the price point for it (was purchased from Harrods ISTR) was very good, before taking in to account the extras.

I'm trying to not get sucked into the hype behind these, but something about the nibs on these Pineiders are just gorgeous. I'm personally drawn towards the malachite green body.

Thanks for sharing some pictures with us.

Thank you for this review, I have been wondering about this nib (discussed in a different thread about flex), as it has two features that seem to be related to two different behaviours, flex/long tines, cut outs/softness.

Noted you mention you are not specifically interested in flex, but softness in the writing and stub nib. The tipped stub looks interesting, I tend to dislike stubs without tipping.

No doubt it would be interesting to try, as it could well be a (specifically designed, by Dante) clever combination of those two features (although Dante himself stated it is designed for softness). Thank you for describing it.

You're going to kick yourself if you don't. Some places are already sold out of some nib sizes.

Im debating between one of the current models and holding out for the honeycomb. The honeycomb is so unique but that could easily backfire on me.

Thanks for the mini review. I just ordered mine from Goulet with EF nib. Not much information about this pen on the internet but I am interested in the nib design so I took the plunge.

Thanks very much for the review. Are the nibs transferable to another pen body, like a Visconti?

Thanks for the review! I was interested at first but was not sure about it being a C/C. I tend to only buy piston fill pens these days but after what you said I might just have to think about getting one.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
