Shakespeare Fp Value

I was hesitant about buying one of these at the time (must have held it in the boutique about 5-6 times), but passed because although it was a "cool" pen, I just didn't love the design enough to pull the trigger. I had a feeling it would sell out, become scarce/valuable and I'd regret it. And that instinct was correct...

The pen is completely unavailable anywhere (particularly in the UK, but seemingly globally), and has been for the best part of a year. The last few sets also sold out a while back. Not that this is a surprise with modern Writers Editions.

I had a look on eBay and was very surprised by recent prices (bearing in mind that the MSRP was £770, and that was after a price increase in late 2016). In 2018, used FPs have sold on eBay for between £828 and £1,130, with new ones selling for £900+ (and one is currently listed for £2,795).

It looks as if the Shakespeare could head towards the same cult status of some of the most desirable WE pens, such as Hemmingway and Proust etc.

I pretty much did the same. Incredible appreciation on these and other

MB Writersseries pens.

I usually miss out on these because the price looks too high. Then later I kick myself for not buying. You can’t buy then all though.

I have a Schiller that has nearly doubled in value over what I paid for it.

I have to say I was equally surprised by second hand values, particularly given, IMHO, it is not one of the best looking WEs !

But when you need one to finish your WE collection you have to bite the bullet :)

  • 2 months later...

The ink is still "get-able" at $40. A few even sold in the last couple months under $30. No need to pay $97 at this point...

It's among the best red inks I've seen. Glad to have got a bottle, sad to see it running out, now.

There's a thread in the ink forums which offers alternatives to popular, discontinued inks. I know it's not the same thing, but I've fared well by their advice in the past.

Enjoy.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
