I don't have that edition, so I can't say. I do have the 3rd Edition. It seems good but there were a couple of times where I'd wished that there was a little more detail about more unusual fill systems/brands. If I actually did repairs, that might be a major issue. (I also have a copy of "Da Book" which I bought several years ago as a good starting point -- and because it was way cheaper...).

"It's very nice, but frankly, when I signed that list for a P-51, what I had in mind was a fountain pen."

I have Da Book, and so Im hoping this one has more info (considering it is 300 pages). Is this a safe assumption?

Yes. Plus, it's a lot more detailed, and is in color. It's not perfect -- and I do really like the diagrams in "Da Book" -- but I'm happy to have both. From what I've read, "Da Book" has a lot of "hacks" which are not really good in the long run, so Marshall and Oldfield is good to have. But as I said, I don't have the newest edition.

I have both books too but use M & O much more than "Da Book", so I'd say go ahead, you won't be sorry.

I have all four editions. The authors are both very well respected and credible within the pen repair community. I don't envisage any issues.

That is commitment. ;) How much difference is there between editions? I have the 3rd.

I can’t lie and say that I have read all four books and compared them side by side. They aren’t completely different books, there is some duplication but also some improved repair techniques and additional information etc. Plus I also liked the idea of collecting them all, unfortunately the hobby doesn’t just stop at pens :-).

The third edition has 280 pages. The fourth edition has 301 pages.

About three pages have been removed,so there is significant extra material and some of the existing material has been updated/expanded.

The introductory section on parts, filling systems and basic procedures has expanded by 8 pages.

Section two on specific makes and procedures is 10 pages longer with material on rarer makes and also more on ballpoints and pencils.

Section 3 on advanced techniques has 3 additional pages on tools/machining and a few pages have been significantly updated and reorganised.

I will take that as sufficiently authoritative. :D

I see what you did there. :D Plus, Dr. Oldfield is a pleasure to do business with and makes some very important tools for the serious folk. Straight to the point - he is a legend.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
