Noodler's 54Th Massachusetts

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone !

I'm considering buying the Noodler's 54th Massachusetts ink for my TWSBI Diamond 580AL with a Fine nib, but I've read some reviews mentioning that in some case, it dried and clogged the pen...

Do you have any more information about that ? Would you still recommend me to buy this ink ?

I know that the TWSBI pen isn't an amazing neither really expensive pen, but to me, it still represents a big investment and I really don't want to damage it...

Thanks a lot for your help !

Grégory

Hello Grégory,

don't let the ink dry out, then nothing will be clogged. Massachusetts 54th is a good ink, not that difficult to clean.

Seeking a Parker Duofold Centennial cap top medallion/cover/decal.
My Mosaic Black Centennial MK2 lost it (used to have silver color decal).

Preferably MK2. MK3 or MK1 is also OK as long as it fits.
Preferably EU.

I don't recall using 54th Massachusetts in my 580, but it's possible. I don't use it very often. aurore is correct, don't let it dry out and you should be ok. As it is a bulletproof ink it might be a little more difficult than other non- bulletproof inks, but shouldn't be to bad.

I've used 54th M in my 580AL EF with no problems if you write with it every few days. If it does dry, a few drops of water on the feed gets it flowing again. 54th Mass is my favorite ink. I keep it in a Lamy 2000 EF all the time. The hooded nib never dries out even after a week or more of disuse.

Favorite pen/ink pairings: Edison Brockton w/EF 14K gold nib and Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Visconti Pinanfarina w/EF chromium conical nib and Noodler's El Lawrence; Sheaffer Legacy w/18k extra fine inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Sheaffer PFM III fine w/14k inlaid nib and Noodler's Black; Lamy 2000 EF with Noodler's 54th Massachusetts; Franklin Christoph 65 Stablis w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and DeAtramentis Document Blue; Pilot Decimo w/18k fine nib and Pilot Blue Black; Franklin Christoph 45 w/steel Masuyama fine cursive italic and Noodler's Zhivago; Edison Brockton EF and Noodler's El Lawrence; TWSBI ECO EF with Noodler's Bad Green Gator.

It's a great ink and you'll be fine with it if you follow the tips the others have supplied.

I've used Noodler's 54th in my Pilot Decimo without any issues for quite a while now. I'll probably also include it in my ink rotation in my TWSBI 580 as well. As long as you're good about cleaning it out, it should be fine.

I have the Sailor Naginata and some fancy blade nibs coming after 2022 by a number of new workshop from China.  With all my respect, IMHO, they are all (bleep) in doing chinese characters.  Go use a bush, or at least a bush pen.

It is the reason why I'm so keen on the idea of a personal library — of pens, nibs, inks, paper products, etc. — and spent so much money, as well as time and effort, to “build” it for myself (because I can't simply remember everything, especially as I'm getting older fast) and my wife, so that we can “know”; and, instead of just disposing of what displeased us, or even just not good enough to be “given the time of day” against competition from >500 other pens and >500 other inks for our at

Agreed.  And I think it’s good to be aware of this early on and think about at the point of buying rather than rationalizing a purchase..

Alas, one cannot know “good” without some idea of “bad” against which to contrast; and, as one of my former bosses (back when I was in my twenties) used to say, “on the scale of good to bad…”, it's a spectrum, not a dichotomy. Whereas subjectively acceptable (or tolerable) and unacceptable may well be a dichotomy to someone, and finding whether the threshold or cusp between them lies takes experiencing many degrees of less-than-ideal, especially if the decision is somehow influenced by factors o

I got my first real fountain pen on my 60th birthday and many hundreds of pens later I’ve often thought of what I should’ve known in the beginning. I have many pens, the majority of which have some objectionable feature. If they are too delicate, or can’t be posted, or they are too precious to face losing , still they are users, but only in very limited environments..  I have a big disliking for pens that have the cap jump into the air and fly off. I object to Pens that dry out, or leave blobs o
